Beaumont drivers face recurring flooding on I-10 stretch near Sam's Club

A persistent issue plagues drivers on a stretch of Interstate 10 near Sam's Club, where heavy rain floods the westbound lane, forcing commuters to navigate standing water and avoid hydroplaning.

Ethan Weatherly, who commutes on I-10, said, "About every time it rains for 10-15 minutes it gets flooded. Often times when I'm coming to go to work or leaving to go to work I take the back ways. I take the feeder roads. If I do go up on the highway I have to get in the middle lane otherwise it's going to flood."

Video footage captured Monday afternoon shows the westbound lane overtaken by water, causing drivers to brake suddenly. Weatherly, who has worked at a nearby furniture store for the past decade, noted that flooding has consistently been an issue.

"When I leave, if I see the lights backed up all the way over there I know to change routes when I'm going home," Weatherly said.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) maintains storm inlets weekly to aid drainage. However, TxDOT attributed the recent flooding to flash flooding.

Tanya Avila from TxDOT explained, "We have to make sure that we have the proper lane closures to move our crews into that area where there is possibly some issues. In this case they had to wait for the rain to slow down to get in there and to check the inlets and make sure all the culverts are clear all the drainage was clear to make sure the water was receding and it was."

TxDOT also attributes the flooding issue is also linked to the ongoing I-10 interchange project, which began in 2022. The construction, expected to be completed in 2026, will resolve the drainage problems according to TxDOT.

The flooding has even impacted KFDM, with a station vehicle totaled last July after being rear-ended while slowing for floodwaters during heavy rainfall.
