Basketball Team Owner Ejected Before Tipoff over Shocking Behavior
Panathinaikos will play Olympiacos in Game 2 of the Greek Basketball League finals on Sunday inside the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Piraeus.
Heading into their second meeting, after Panathinaikos won Game 1 of the three-game series 80-68, things got intense early when an altercation between Olympiacos fans and Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos broke out, according to a basketnews.com report.
The report claims Giannakopoulos was seen arriving at the arena alongside the Panathinaikos team delegation before being met by a crowd of rival fans chanting insults at him. Furthermore, the situation escalated once the fans began chanting obscenities at Giannakopoulos' daughter.
Enraged by the chants, the team’s owner approached the scorer’s table and demanded the officials record the fans to throw them out of the arena. The referees responded by requesting Giannakopoulos' removal from the stadium, citing a gesture he made toward the crowd, which stands as grounds for expulsion, according to ERT3’s Live Broadcast.
