On Tuesday, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and other top members of the PDP met in Abuja ahead of the unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the coalition’s choice political platform for the 2027 elections.
The former Nigeria governor at the meeting.
The coalition, made up of several opposition figures, was in Abuja on Wednesday.
Speaking in a viral video on social media, Aliyu clarified that he only attended a PDP stakeholders’ meeting last Tuesday and not the coalition gathering where ADC was adopted.
The former governor said his presence at the PDP stakeholders’ meeting had been misinterpreted by some as evidence of his involvement in the ADC coalition.
“That meeting on Tuesday was a PDP stakeholders’ meeting, and that was why I was there,” he said.
“But you could see that when it was declared at the last meeting that the coalition had adopted ADC, I wasn’t there.”
He said true service to the country or fulfilment of personal ambition is not determined by party movement.
“I believe that whether it is personal ambition or concern about the state of Nigeria, you can contribute meaningfully from wherever you are,” he said.
“And in terms of personal ambition, that which Allah will give you, you will get it wherever you are. It is not moving from one party to another that determines that.”
Aliyu cautioned against misleading Nigerians while insisting that he holds no grudge against anyone switching parties.
“It is very important for us to understand that we cannot continue to take Nigerians for a ride,” he said.
“And please, I have no problem with anybody who wants to join another party.”
The former governor reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP and noted that he would only reconsider his membership if the need arises.
“I remain a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, the PDP,” he said.
“I am still a member. If it becomes necessary, I could decide what to do. But as of now, I am still with the PDP.”
