Aviation industry increases cybersecurity and IT investment to safeguard future of travel
SITA’s 2024 Air Transport IT Insights report highlights the aviation sector’s growing investment in cybersecurity, biometrics, and sustainability. With 74 per cent of airlines and 72 per cent of airports predicting a rise in IT spend, the report underscores a transformation in operations to meet increasing digital threats and rising passenger demand. Key focuses include enhanced cybersecurity, biometric adoption, and data-driven solutions to drive operational efficiency and sustainability.

SITA’s 2024 Air Transport IT Insights report reveals a marked shift in the aviation industry’s approach to future-proofing air travel, with a strong emphasis on cybersecurity, biometrics, and sustainability. As digital threats become more sophisticated, airlines and airports are ramping up their IT investments to protect critical systems and enhance passenger experience. The industry’s overall IT spend is projected to reach USD37 billion for airlines and almost USD9 billion for airports in 2024, with 74 per cent of airlines and 72 per cent of airports expecting increased IT expenditure over the next two years.
One of the primary areas of focus is cybersecurity, with 66 per cent of airlines and 73 per cent of airports identifying it as a top priority. The industry is responding to rising cyber threats by upgrading IT infrastructure, moving to the cloud, and safeguarding passenger data. David Lavorel, CEO of SITA, commented, “This year's findings highlight a pivotal moment for the aviation industry. As cyber threats become more complex, airlines and airports are taking decisive action to protect their operations and passengers."
Biometric technology is also transforming the passenger experience. Over half of airports plan to implement biometrics for check-in and bag drop by 2026, while 70 per cent of airlines are set to adopt biometric ID management systems within the same timeframe. These advancements will reduce congestion, cut wait times, and enhance the travel experience. Moreover, data-driven solutions, including AI, machine learning, and predictive analytics, are revolutionising flight operations, customer service, and passenger flow management.
Sustainability remains a core focus, with airlines and airports making significant strides towards net-zero emissions by 2050. The adoption of real-time software for flight optimisation, carbon emissions calculation, and collaboration with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) suppliers is on the rise. Lavorel added, “Sustainability is essential for the future of aviation. The adoption of tech like flight optimisation software and SAF systems shows real progress in reducing carbon footprints.”
The SITA report, based on insights from over 250 senior airline and airport executives, reflects a major shift towards tech-driven solutions, aiming to create safer, more efficient, and sustainable air travel for the future.
