Australian Open 2025: Ryan Papenhuyzen takes dig at Melbourne Storm teammates; Jannik Sinner praise, comments

Ryan Papenhuyzen is one of many athletes enjoying the Australian Open this week - but the Storm superstar couldn't help but take a sly dig at some of his teammates.

The 26-year-old was on deck at Melbourne Park on Saturday night, tuning in to watch defending champion Jannik Sinner go about his business in a straight-sets win.

However, according to the Storm speedster, not all of his footy buddies were as keen to see the world's best player in action at Rod Laver Arena.

"It was good to come down here, it's one of Melbourne's great events," Papenhuyzen said during the Nine broadcast on Sunday morning.

"We had a few boys down here last night - a lot of them just hung around the Canadian Club tent - but there's a few of us who love our tennis and went in to watch Sinner.

"It was very interesting and I quite liked the interview he did after, it was quite insightful to his routine - a lot of sleeping and a lot of tennis.

"Those are the sort of insights you try to gather being an athlete."

Sinner revealed that he sleeps 10 hours the night before a match, but it's quite clearly working wonders for the Italian as he searches for another grand slam triumph.

For the rugby league crop, their attention will soon turn to the opening round of the 2025 season, which will see Melbourne take on the Parramatta Eels.

Papenhuyzen said the club's recent training camp in Geelong has put them on the right path to go one step better and come away with the premiership - but there is one issue keeping the star-studded squad on their toes.

"Our couple of weeks in Geelong is about reviewing last season and how we can get better," the fullback said.

"There's a massive anxiety hanging over us because this time last year, they sprung an army camp on us and I have some slight suspicions that they might do that again.

"We haven't lost too many people from last year - but if you look at the past few years, the guys who lost the grand final haven't performed well the year after.

"We're just trying to identify areas we can get better at and not get complacent. We weren't too far off, but other teams are improving and we're no different."
