Australian Fashion Week: Attendees reveal the trend that needs to end - now - 9Style

Published 12 hours ago3 minute read

I asked at least a dozen Australian Fashion Week attendees the same question: What fashion trend needs to die? The answer surprised me.

There's no particular trend that needs to end – they shouldn't exist at all.

For fashion fanatics, a trend is just something that can be mass-produced and sold to consumers.

Instead, they say fashion is all about finding your personal style and sticking to it.

Fashion lover Jemima Adam told me that trends can limit someone's creativity when trying to find their own style.

"Real creativity is starting to die with microtrends, everyone is wearing the same thing , the point of fashion is wearing your own personal style," Adam said.

"It's so important to branch out and wear your own thing, wear whatever you like."

She was right. Every outfit I saw at fashion week was incredible because it was creative and unique, not because it was trendy.

There was not one repeated shirt, accessory or shoe. Personal style is clearly at the forefront of every outfit.

Influencer Josh Carroll told me that trends don't have to stop, but people should wear what they want, even if it's not trendy.

"If you're confident in it and that works for you... Then that's the best," Carroll said.

Fashionista Candy Brat said trends are "disappointing."

"I think [trends] are disappointing, I want people to be able to discover their own personal style, not follow trends... just be themselves," fashion lover Candy Brat said.

"It's about being in touch with yourself and knowing yourself well enough to know what you're comfortable in and not anyone else."

Influencer Ethan Lazarof added that personal style can be empowering.

"Having personal style is a true power in the sense of feeling comfortable in your own skin," Lazarof said.

Okay, we get it – personal style is important. But how do you find your own sense of style on a limited budget or without succumbing to micro trends?

Fashion students Sophia Poole and Iris Petrovski said finding unique accessories can elevate any basic outfit and create a strong sense of style.

"Every shop is following the trends of what comes on the runways, then it filters down to what they think everyone wants to buy... it is very hard to find your own unique personality through what you wear," Poole said.

"That's why I think it is important, the way you accessorise [or] your choice of jacket... it all informs who you are."

"Fashion is self-expression, everyone should be dressing [in] what makes them feel like them," Petrovski added.

"Just finding something that's a bit more elevated... that's my personal style. "

Thrifting and finding inspiration online is another way fashion lovers can find elevated items or outfit inspiration.

"Just looking around! What I love to do is go on Pinterest and just look at everyone's style from decades ago to now, just deciding what you like what you don't like," Adam said.

" Also accept that you might fail sometimes...I feel like the most fashionable people have bad outfits sometimes."

"In order to have really awesome outfits you might have some really crap ones... and thats fine!"
