At least 10 people have been confirmed dead and 15 others injured following a landslide in northwest Colombia, the governor of Antioquia province announced on Tuesday.

Governor Andrés Julián Rendón confirmed the incident in a post on X, stating that search and rescue operations were still underway as emergency teams worked through the debris in hopes of finding survivors.

“With deep sadness, we report that a landslide has left at least 10 people dead and 15 injured. Search and rescue efforts continue at the scene,” the governor wrote.

The disaster struck a rural area of Antioquia province, which has been experiencing persistent heavy rainfall in recent days, raising the risk of landslides and flash floods.

Local authorities, firefighters, and military personnel have been deployed to assist in the rescue operation. Images circulating on social media showed a swath of earth covering a stretch of road and partially buried vehicles, with responders digging through the mud.

Officials have urged residents in high-risk zones to remain alert and evacuate if necessary, as the region continues to face adverse weather conditions.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed solidarity with the victims’ families and praised the emergency crews for their swift response. “Our thoughts are with the families affected by this tragedy. We will continue to support the response efforts in Antioquia,” he said.

Landslides are a recurring hazard in Colombia’s mountainous regions, particularly during the rainy season, when saturated soil on steep slopes becomes prone to collapse.
