Alas, the 97th annual Academy Awards are finally here. The Oscars 2025, hosted this year by comedian Conan O’Brien, brought out the film world to the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles tonight. It’s the final act in what has been a historic (and, at times, very chaotic and unpredictable) awards season.

But before stepping inside the Dolby Theatre, stars of the past year’s biggest and boldest films hit the Oscars red carpet to show off their fanciest black tie outfits. Among them were Best Actress hopefuls Demi Moore and Mikey Madison, A Complete Unknown star Timothée Chalamet, and Wicked leading ladies Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande (later they’ll delight the crowd with a performance of tunes from the Jon M. Chu blockbuster). And with the likes of Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Emma Stone, and Elle Fanning scheduled to present awards this evening (as well as a performance by Blackpink’s Lisa, Raye, and Doja Cat), the Oscars red carpet wasn’t short on sheer star power. Ariana Grande did her Glinda proud in a pale pink stunner, and her “Wicked” bestie Cynthia Erivo honored Elphaba in deep forest green on the Oscars carpet as high glam took over Sunday. Others went for bold red, classic black, and pops of pink.

Grande wore a look from the Schiaparelli spring-summer 2025 collection. It was a perfect Glinda ode with no straps and a structured skirt that fell into airy pleats. Erivo, always a fashion darling, wore custom Louis Vuitton with a high triangular collar and huge shoulders, her signature long nails the usual on-point compliment.

“Cynthia Erivo is a true fashionista who understands how beauty also plays into the overall look. I’m always impressed by her otherworldly nails. Tonight they were obviously an homage to ‘Wicked,’ a full set of black, gold, and emerald-hued stiletto nails handcrafted by Mycah Dior,” said Julee Wilson, Cosmopolitan’s beauty editor-at-large.

In gowns, metallics also had a strong showing in body-con looks: Demi Moore in sexy silver custom Giorgio Armani Privé and Mindy Kaling in a silver Oscar de la Renta gown with chunky embellishment among them. Emma Stone went for a slinky metallic nude. Felicity Jones was in steel gray worthy of her film, “The Brutalist.” And Selena Gomez was a bombshell in a Ralph Lauren look of full crystals in metallic pink.

“The Oscars red carpet style really leaned into old Hollywood glamour, which is a trend that’s been building throughout the last year on the red carpet and on the runways,” said Brooke Bobb, fashion news director for Harper’s Bazaar.

“Right now in fashion, we’re seeing a return to elegance and to intentional dressing, with designers tracking away from quiet luxury and moving towards something much more bold and, dare we say, exciting,” she added.

Lupita Nyong’o, a fashion “it” girl from her start, got that memo. She worea  white custom Chanel with more than 22,000 pearls. Whoopi Goldberg wore an off-the-shoulder liquid metallic blue gown that she spotted on the runway while sitting front row at Christian Siriano’s recent New York Fashion Week show.

Most kept their jewels demure.

Timothée Chalamet, never afraid to go his own fashion way, wore a custom Givenchy look by the company’s new creative director, Sarah Burton. It was a soft yellow trouser and short jacket leather combo. Chalamet is never afraid to go his own fashion way. Jeff Goldblum added an orchid flower arrangement to his off-white Prada tuxedo jacket lapel. The “Wicked” star walked the Prada runway in 2022.

Derek Guy, a menswear specialist known for his dieworkwear.com blog and Instagram feed, had his personal favorites.

“Mario Lopez was among the best dressed. He wore a midnight navy, single-breasted, peak lapel dinner suit with a fly front shirt and black bow tie,” Guy said. “Nowadays, midnight navy is a subtle way to make a dinner suit look more distinctive from the sea of black.”

He also had kind words for “Wicked” director Jon Chu.

“He looked great in an olive dinner jacket. When guys try to innovate on classic formalwear, or, technically speaking, semi-formalwear since black tie is a notch below white tie, they often go a little too far and too wacky,” Guy said.

Chu kept it simple, he said, with good tailoring, a pleated formal shirt, and beautiful cufflinks.

“But the slightly more unique fabric made the look distinctive. The quality of the tailoring is always going to be more important than gimmicks, and his outfit fit very well,” Guy said.

Red endured at the Oscars as a strong trend. Among the walkers wearing the color: were Zoe Saldaña in a maroon strapless tiered look with a crystal-embellished bodice by Saint Laurent and Storm Reid in a bright shortie dress with a long cape. Saldaña accessorized with sheer black opera gloves. She debuted a Cartier emerald, onyx and diamond short necklace with a panther motif from the company’s High Jewelry collection.

Others stuck to black, including Marlee Matlin in Yara Shoemaker Couture and Coco Jones in sexy Coach, a custom look using vintage fabric. Yasmin Finney also chose black, peaking out from tall black feathers attached to the top of her dress. Fernanda Torres, the “I’m Still Here” star, stood out in body-skimming black feathers. The look was Chanel Haute Couture.

Miley Cyrus was a literal rock queen in a black, high-neck custom McQueen with shredded tulle, glass beads, and sequin details. She paired the look with short black lace gloves.

Elle Fanning, meanwhile, also wore Sarah Burton’s Givenchy, the first to do so in public since Chalamet arrived later. It was a classic Hollywood white gown with a sweetheart neckline and black belt with long tails.

The men brought out the color from Chalamet to actor Colman Domingo. Domingo has become a red-carpet standout for all his refreshing looks. He wore a bright red Valentino tuxedo jacket with a matching belt and black trousers. Jeremy Strong and Andrew Garfield both wore variations of the color brown.

Julianne Hough kicked things off in an elegant light beige ethereal look straight off the Christian Dior spring 2025 runway. Joan Chen also went fairy-like in green chartreuse, an off-shoulder number from the Elie Saab resort 2025 collection. Monica Barbaro joined the pink club in Dior.

Swedish singer and actor Kayo Shekoni lifted up her black heel to reveal the words “free Congo” on the red carpet, advocating for the conflict-ridden African nation.

“Conclave” writer Peter Straughan showed his support for Ukraine with a Ukrainian flag pin accent on his tuxedo.

“Just to say, let’s not turn our backs on Ukraine,” he told Variety’s Marc Malkin.

The pin carries extra significance after a tense meeting unfolded between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House with President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance on Friday.

The team behind best documentary nominee “Porcelain War,” the story of Ukrainian artists who trade their paintbrushes for guns to fight against the Russian invasion, also sported Ukrainian flag pins.

“The Brutalist” actor Guy Pearce showed up wearing a “FREE PALESTINE” pin featuring a white dove and a gold branch. The award show comes as Israel stopped the entry of all food and other supplies into Gaza on Sunday. Pearce, who has expressed his support throughout the awards season with various pins, said “It’s the least we can do.”“I’m just always on the case of trying to recognize Palestine and its having as much support as it possibly can because it’s what it absolutely needs.

Kathleen Hou, beauty director for Elle, saw an easy glamour.

“Nothing looked forced, fussy or overly dramatic,” she said. “The makeup featured a lot of nude glow, like the awards-season version of no-makeup-makeup, as seen on stars like Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, Halle Berry, and Demi Moore.”

Hairstyles, Hou said, “were very polished and modern, with details like glass-like shine and slickness, and a mix of knotted updos and loose styles.”

Wilson gave makeup props to Halle Berry and Moore.

“It’s not about them rocking a particular trend,” she said. “It’s about their timeless beauty. I mean, do they age?”

Wilson also noted all the tight hair.

“Lots of beauties in buns. Ariana Grande, Elle Fanning, Lupita Nyong’o, Scarlett Johansson and more stepped out in the sleek ’do. You can’t go wrong with such a classic look, especially in the stunning gowns they were wearing,” she said.

Mikey Madison, Moore, Chalamet, Grande, and Erivo had a lot of red carpet wow momentum heading into the Oscars.

The 97th Oscars come less than two months after the devastating Los Angeles fires subdued carpet dressing for a time. As the city moves into rebuild mode, stars have been upping their fashion games heading into the biggest awards night of the season.

Some are notable for playing it glam but safe.

Like Margot Robbie’s Barbie pink, Grande has been mostly sticking to a far paler hue, her signature and an homage to her “Wicked” Good Witch. Castmate Erivo has always taken fashion risks. She ditched her Elphaba black for last week’s Screen Actors Guild awards, opting for a silver Givenchy look with a high shaggy collar worthy of her bad witch role.

Chalamet has been all over the place on carpet dressing as he navigates his Bob Dylan attention from “A Complete Unknown.” At the SAGs, he married a bright brat green button-up shirt from Chrome Hearts with a shiny black leather suit and a bolo tie as he continues to channel the real-life icon he plays.

Madison, a new fashion darling, wore a baby pink and black satin gown by Dior. She was among several stars to go vintage at the recent dinner for Oscar nominees. The star of “Anora” wore a dark blue velvet gown by Bill Blass from 1987. She collected a BAFTA award earlier this month in a custom Prada in ivory, accessorizing with a long matching stole and a vintage Tiffany & Co. diamond necklace.

She also went Hollywood bombshell at the SAGs with a strapless silver Louis Vuitton look with a large pleated bow at the waist. She’s been working with stylist Jamie Mizrahi, who has dressed Adele and Jennifer Lawrence, among many other celebs.

 At long last, we have arrived at the final stop of awards season: the 2025 Oscars. The 97th annual Academy Awards—taking place at Dolby Theater in Los Angeles—was a red-carpet-turned-runway on Sunday night, with many stars donning the latest looks from the spring 2025 couture catwalks and others making major archival pulls. The nominees came out in their finest, from Fernanda Torres—up for the Best Actress award for her role in I’m Still Here—who wore a gown from Chanel’s spring-summer 2025 collection made of guipure, black silk chiffon, feathers, and jeweled buttons (and a sequined jacket to match). Best Actress contender Demi Moore shut down the red carpet in her glittering Armani Privé number, which featured draping and padded hips at the front—the choice of designer was no doubt strategic, as Giorgio Armani has a strong track record of dressing Oscar winners. Elle Fanning wore a very special Givenchy gown: designer Sarah Burton’s first-ever couture piece for the French house, a white frock with a black empire waist and a watteau-back silhouette paired with Cartier jewels. But it was Fanning’s A Complete Unknown costar, Timothée Chalamet, who perhaps stole the show in a butter-yellow cropped jacket and matching slacks cut like a pair of jeans also from Givenchy. It was a pretty electric moment for the star—one that will ring especially unforgettable if he wins Best Actor for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in the James Mangold film. Timothée Chalamet sets trends whenever gets dressed, but the A Complete Unknown actor’s 2025 Oscars look is historic on several fronts. Chalamet slipped into a butter yellow Givenchy design (that featured...leather jeans?) for the evening which also doubled as a date night with his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner. Once inside the Dolby Theatre, Chalamet met up with Jenner who wore a va-va-voom outfit by Miu Miu.

Like his A Complete Unknown co-star Elle Fanning, Chalamet’s Givenchy outfit is designed by its newly-appointed creative director Sarah Burton. It featured a cropped suit coat and a matching button-down worn underneath. Already, the pairing was outside of the usual boring black suits the Oscars’s male attendees usually go for. But instead of matching dress pants, Chalamet slipped on loose-fitting trousers that were cut like a pair of baggy jeans: see the belt loops, rivets, and some exposed stitching.

Even the actor’s choice of bold color was notable. Butter yellow has been popular among the women of Hollywood—Hailey Bieber, Jennifer Lawrence, Ariana Grande, to name a few—but rarely has a man been brave enough to wear this particular shade.

Those familiar with Chalamet’s fashion track record shouldn’t necessarily be surprised by his red-carpet risk this evening. The actor made history at the 2022 Oscars when he wore a fully bedazzled Louis Vuitton suit jacket without a shirt.

Chalamet decided to pose without Jenner on the red carpet this evening, as has been tradition for the couple throughout this awards season. The duo most recently attended the BAFTA Awards together in February where Jenner opted for a backless sheer dress from John Galliano’s spring 1995 collection. Jenner did not attend last week’s SAG Awards, where Chalamet won the trophy for Best Actor, due to the passing of her friend and hair stylist, Jesus Guerrero. Surely, Chalamet brought along the perfect good luck charm if he is to take home his first-ever Oscar this evening.

Kylie Jenner has been by Timothée Chalamet’s side throughout this award season, so it’s no surprise that the social media star made it to the Oscars on Sunday night. Per usual, Jenner opted out of the red carpet, but when Chalamet made it into the Dolby Theater, she was there to support him on his big night.

Of course, Jenner looked the part. She attended the event in a custom black Miu Miu dress. Likely, Jenner chose the subdued hue to keep the focus on Chalamet, who made quite the statement in a butter yellow, leather suit courtesy of Sarah Burton at Givenchy. Still, the look felt Oscars-appropriate thanks to its heavy embellishment, bra-style top, and major cutouts on the bodice.

Once together, Jenner and Chalamet had no problem engaging in some PDA, whispering in each other’s ears and sharing a kiss, which was captured by the cameras. Their front-row seat also meant they were approached by many other attendees ahead of the ceremony. Chalamet’s A Complete Unknown costar Edward Norton stopped by to say hello, as did Elle Fanning, whom Jenner got to know quite well when they sat together at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this year. Their prime seating also means Jenner has been featured times throughout the broadcast, whenever the camera cuts to Chalamet in the audience. If the actor wins Best Actor tonight, it will be interesting to see if he thanks his girlfriend in his acceptance speech.

It has been quite a week for Jenner, who recently lost her close friend and hairstylist, Jesus Guerrero. Jenner’s makeup artist, Ariel Tejada, posted about her look on Instagram, acknowledging Guerrero in the caption. “Today was really hard without you, but I know how excited you were for Ky to attend the Oscars,” he wrote. “I felt your energy guiding us today. I hope we did you proud.”

Tyla makes a strong case for the statement shoe. Last night, the South African musician attended the Essence Black Women In Hollywood event in a simple (albeit fully sequined) party dress that she paired with a daring shoe choice.

Tyla slipped into a form-fitting yellow number that was dripping in sparkle. Of course, the singer loves herself a mini dress like this one (she just a wore vintage Galliano for Dior dress at the Super Bowl that featured a similar cut). But it was how she went about styling her outfit that added something new.

She paired her pale yellow dress with gold jewelry and chocolate brown sandal heels that laced all the way up her legs. Tyla’s shoes featured belt-like closures and a square-toe front. Statement belts are back, but this is surely a novel way to incorporate the accessory into an outfit.

Tyla and her stylist Ron Hartleben have made a habit out of accenting little party dresses with unexpected footwear in the past—though her gladiator shoes are perhaps the most extreme example yet. At the Super Bowl earlier this month, she paired her lace Dior slip dress with see-through PVC heels. She also wore an archival DSquared2 dress that she paired with ballet-inspired pumps that traveled up her ankles.

Styling a bold, statement shoe like Tyla’s with a simple party dress is no new phenomenon, of course. The styling trick has roots in the minimalism of the ’90s but is also a favorite of stars like Bella Hadid and Olivia Rodrigo who have all taken to bold footwear choices recently. Really, it’s an easy way to elevate a relatively simple outfit. And in the case of Tyla’s look last night, amp up the very demure butter-yellow trend in the process.

Ariana Grande’s Good Witch World Tour has landed at the Oscars 2025. The Wicked actor, dressed in an otherworldly sculptural confection straight from the Paris runways, quite actually defied gravity on the red carpet of the 97th annual Academy Awards.

Grande slipped into look three from Schiaparelli’s spring 2025 couture show for her big night in Los Angeles. A blush bustier expanded into an elegant peplum detail (a nod to an archival lamp by Swiss sculptor and frequent Elsa Schiaparelli collaborator Alberto Giacometti) before exploding into layers of sparkling tulle. Of course, Schiaparelli designer Daniel Roseberry and his masterful silhouettes often rival sculpture, and this satin and tulle princess look was no exception. Elegant De Beers jewelry complimented her dress’s sweetheart neckline which featured a ladylike twist on the exposed bra trend.

Roseberry’s Schiaparelli always delights the Internet, but the designer challenged himself beyond simply “breaking the internet” with his latest collection. Instead, he looked back to couture masters of the past. He particularly studied techniques from the Art Deco-informed 1920s and ’30s, and the Hollywood glam of the ’50s. “Haute Couture aspires to reach great heights; it promises escape from our complicated reality,” Roseberry wrote in his show notes. “It also reminds us that perfection comes at a price. How high can we couturiers go? As high as the sun—and the Gods—allow us.” Fitting for a star of Wicked.

Like many of her outfits throughout her Wicked press tour and the subsequent awards season, Grande’s Schiaparelli number was peak Glinda. It wasn’t as overtly themed as some of Grande’s more heavily themed dressing moments—but it’s hard to see this shade of pink and not instantly think of Grande and her turn as Glinda the Good Witch. Some might even go as far as to call the hue “Ariana Pink.”

Grande earned her first-ever Oscar nomination this year in Best Supporting Actress for what she described as her “dream role.” She and her Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo, a Best Actress nominee this year, are scheduled to perform a selection of tunes later this evening from the Jon M. Chu blockbuster. Erivo, for her part, also nodded to her Wicked role this Oscars Sunday. She hit the red carpet in a dark Elphaba green Louis Vuitton dress with a major structure. Expect something even more Oz-ian from the duo as they take to the main stage of the Dolby Theatre.
