Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye is a former Speaker of Parliament

A prominent figure of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, has cautioned members of the party against engaging in divisive politics.

According to him, party members whose public utterances and actions promote division within the party and fail to foster unity do not have the interest and progress of the party at heart.

In his view, Professor Oquaye stated that such individuals have no place in the party, reiterating that their actions could significantly harm the party’s electoral prospects.

Addressing party members at the official launch of the NPP school ‘Patriotic Institute’ on June 25, 2025, Professor Oquaye, a former Speaker of Parliament, said, “Anyone who pursues the pathway of division is not working in the interest of the party and he must be excused. Anybody, anytime, without reference to anyone, any man or woman, now or forever, who works against that established principle will not be doing us any good.”

Professor Oquaye, buttressing his point, recalled historical precedents, particularly the events of 1979 when internal divisions greatly undermined the party’s electoral chances.

He recounted that the NPP, despite having the odds in its favor at the time, lost the 1979 elections to its opponents, the People’s National Party (PNP), which brought Hilla Limann to power, a loss he attributed to internal party divisions.

“Our party, the year 1979, when we had the elections that brought Limann of the PNP to power, was divided into PFP and UNC. I wrote a book on this. You only have to do JSS arithmetic and put the figures together, and you will have realized that the election was cold chop for the Dankwa-Busia tradition, but we decided to fight among ourselves and we lost the election,” he recounted.
