In his post, Kashyap expressed awe at Adolescence, a four-episode series co-created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, which has garnered widespread acclaim since its release on March 13. “Just binge watched Adolescence. I am numb and envious and jealous that someone can go and make that,” he wrote. He lauded the performances of child actor Owen Cooper and Stephen Graham, who also stars as the father, emphasizing the meticulous effort behind the show.

“The amount of hard work that has gone in the show. I can’t even imagine the rehearsals and prep they did, so they could shoot every episode in a single shot,” Kashyap added, crediting cinematographer Matthew Lewis and filmmaker Philip Barantini for their genius. He described the series as “better than any film or anything I’ve seen,” highlighting its courage in capturing every nuance without compromise.

However, Kashyap’s admiration for Adolescence quickly turned into a platform for airing his grievances with Netflix India. In the comments section, he unleashed a blistering attack on the streaming giant’s Indian division, accusing it of hypocrisy, lack of vision, and prioritizing subscriptions over creative integrity. Referencing a recent post by Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, who praised Adolescence for pushing “brand new territories” and defying “the limits of creativity,” Kashyap questioned the sincerity of such claims. “His own Netflix.in is a totally opposite shitshow,” he wrote. “If they were pitched this, most probably they would have rejected it or turned it into a 90-minute film… because it doesn’t have an ending that is black and white.”

Kashyap, who co-directed Netflix India’s groundbreaking series Sacred Games, reflected bitterly on his experiences with the platform post that project. “Having gone through twice with them post Sacred Games and dealing with total lack of empathy, courage and dumbness mixed with immense insecurity of the series head and the team that keeps getting fired. It frustrates me,” he vented. He accused Netflix India of being “dishonest and morally corrupt,” suggesting that its leadership, backed by “the boss in LA” (presumably Sarandos and Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria), is fixated on increasing India’s 1.4 billion-strong market’s subscription numbers rather than fostering bold, honest storytelling.

The filmmaker contrasted the past, when Netflix executive Eric Barmack would personally reach out to collaborate, with the present, where he claims the platform churns out “half-baked” projects like Saare Jahan Se Achcha, a show he says has already undergone multiple directors and reshoots. “It makes me frustrated, jealous of shows like Adolescence and envious and hopeless,” Kashyap lamented. He pointed out that Netflix India’s most successful offerings—such as Delhi Crime, Black Warrant, Kohrra, and Trial by Fire—are either acquired titles or projects the platform initially doubted, urging them to “learn from the reception of [Adolescence]” for a better future.

Adolescence, a psychological thriller about a 13-year-old boy accused of murder, has been celebrated for its innovative single-take episodes and powerful performances, earning universal praise globally.

For now, Kashyap remains hopeful yet skeptical, ending his rant with, “Fingers crossed for a better future.” Whether Netflix India will heed his call—or if this public outburst will further strain his relationship with the platform—remains to be seen.
