Anthony Edwards Could Team up with Idol Kevin Durant as Wolves Seek Another 'Alpha'

Published 4 days ago4 minute read

The way and his Minnesota Timberwolves blitzed through the first two rounds of the playoffs, everyone hoped this was going to be the season where he snatches the crown from , , and Kevin Durant as the new Face of the NBA.

The Wolves had the momentum, as well as the rest, to face the Oklahoma City Thunder. But the latter proved that basketball is, after all, a team sport. A team needs more than a couple of good to great players if they want to succeed in the playoffs.

Every team knows this, but few execute it with the perfection that the Thunder and the Pacers have done this season. The Wolves’ West Finals performance proved that if a defensively good team locks their primary offensive source, the secondary has to step up.

If the secondary also struggles, then there is no chance that a team can survive. The Minnesota Timberwolves are now in a dilemma. They have a team that can reach the Conference Finals, but does not possess the edge to win a title.

Now that their offseason has officially begun, as per sources close to Hoops Wire, the franchise might want to revisit its attempts to land Kevin Durant. They understand they need another ‘alpha’ on the team, and Durant, considering his relationship with Ant Man, could be the perfect solution.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly looking to trade for an “alpha” and are expected to pursue Kevin Durant, per @AmicoHoops

Durant coming in will not upset Anthony Edwards’ ego, considering the Slim Reaper is his idol. Moreover, his veteran presence and championship-winning experience could help his 23-year-old Olympic teammate.

Edwards is without a doubt the ‘Alpha’ on the Minnesota Timberwolves. After his lackluster performances in the Western Conference Finals, he agreed that he needs to work on his game. But if Kevin Durant were to join him in Minneapolis, he should not have a problem, as he claimed his idol was the ‘Alpha’ on Team USA’s Paris Olympics squad.

When the game is on the line, who’s our alpha? I think Kevin Durant, he better be… that’s who I came to see. Who do I look to for advice? Of course, KD, that’s my favorite player of all time, anything I wanna ask, I go straight to him.

Prior to the Olympics, Edwards had swept Durant’s Phoenix Suns in the playoffs, and his trash talk was the highlight of that series. Despite that, to consider his idol as the ‘alpha’ on Team USA, even with LeBron James and Steph Curry on that team, says a lot about how high he holds the Suns star.

The Wolves might have to give up some important pieces. If they can broker a deal with the Suns, who themselves are aware that their leading superstar might leave, it could help them next season. The Wolves need a second elite scorer besides Anthony Edwards, who will not succumb to the pressures of the playoffs.

The Phoenix Suns were open to trading Durant before the trade deadline. They received offers from the Golden State Warriors and the Miami Heat. But there were some other teams in play, and Brian Windhorst revealed that the Minnesota Timberwolves had tried to gauge their interest.

It became clear to me in talking to the parties involved just how serious the Wolves were about trying to trade for Kevin Durant at the trade deadline.

When the ESPN analyst said this on the latest episode of The Hoop Collective, Tim MacMahon nodded in agreement. This seemingly proves that the Wolves did make a legitimate attempt at trying to bring the two-time NBA Finals MVP to their city. Maybe the superstar just did not want to move at the time and might have vetoed this deal, too.
