Anne Burrell's Memorial Included 'Big Send-Off' of Billy Joel Karaoke With Food Network Colleagues
Beloved Food Network star Chef Anne Burrell died suddenly on Tuesday, June 17, at the age of 55 at the Brooklyn home she shared with her husband Stuart Claxton and stepson Javier.
On Friday, June 20, Claxton hosted a memorial service for her at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. According to the New York Times, over 200 friends, relatives and Food Network colleagues were there to remember the renowned chef.
As guests arrived, they were given red Sharpies in honor of the fact that that is what Burrell used to write on the hands of Worst Cooks in America contestants who weren't holding their knives correctly. As they waited to sign the memorial book, Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" was playing over the sound system.

In the lobby, there were two mannequins on display — one wearing a jersey for Burrell's beloved New York Rangers hockey team, and the other wearing one of Burrell's embroidered chef's jackets with a red Sharpie clipped to the sleeve.
On the chairs inside the hall, each seat had a printed set of lyrics to Billy Joel's "Only the Good Die Young," a line from which Burrell had put beneath her high school yearbook photo — "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints. The sinners are much more fun."
At the end of the service, Claxton had the audience give Burrell "a big send-off" by singing the iconic Joel hit. Burrell was known for loving karaoke.
Food Network attendees included Scott Conant, Amanda Freitag, Marc Forgione and Geoffrey Zakarian. Those who spoke included Claxton and Burrell's manager Scott Feldman.

"I was there to keep things on track,” Feldman said (per the New York Times). “And Anne was there to do what she did.”
"She would describe herself as a professional pleasure provider. She loved a good double entendre," said Claxton.

Zakarian and Conant both wrote lovely messages to their co-star on Instagram after her sudden passing. You can read Conant's heartbreaking message about their 30-year friendship here.
"This is what joy looks like and Anne threaded that needle every single day," wrote Zakarian next to a photo of a huge group of Chopped stars. "It’s such a sad time, and my thoughts are all over the place, but everyone in this picture was and will ever be, enamored with her kindness and how she always loved her craft and her chef family with every bit of her soul. She lived by the phrase that most rarely do, Carpe Diem. God bless your delightful soul, my good friend."
