Ancient tree at Will Stella Farm cut down

An iconic, huge white oak tree at Will Stella Farm on Hastings Hill Road in Kernersville was cut down last Thursday after it was determined to pose a hazard.

The tree was the backdrop for numerous events, such as hundreds of weddings and a political campaign rally last February featuring Donald J. Trump Jr. and other politicians, said Angie Brown, who manages the Will Stella Farm events center.

“We’ve had over 300 weddings here, and most of the time they chose to do it under the tree,” she said. “We did not want this to happen, but it was getting to be dangerous as far as the limbs falling. We didn’t think the tree would fall on the house, but limbs the size of small trees were falling, and we didn’t want anybody to get hurt.”

A tree expert who examined it a few years ago said the tree could be about 300 years old, she said.

“The tree cutting guy said it was the second-largest tree they have taken down,” she said.

Brown said the trunk was 78 inches in diameter and had a 23-foot circumference. The tree was between 110 and 120 feet tall.
