ANC now officially dissolved, shifting Western politics

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi’s Amani National Congress (ANC) has officially ceased to exist following its voluntary dissolution.
According to the notice issued by Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu, the party’s Special National Delegates Congress, held on February 7, 2025, resolved to dissolve the outfit in accordance with its constitution.
This marks the end of the political outfit that was founded in 2015 and had become synonymous with Mudavadi.
The dissolution came after the ANC’s alignment with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
With ANC leaders now absorbed into UDA’s structure, the move is expected to significantly alter the political dynamics in ANC strongholds, particularly in Western Kenya and parts of the Coast.
In the 2022 general election, the party produced seven Members of Parliament and one governor.
They are Omboko Milemba (Emuhaya), Charles Gimose (Hamisi), Fred Ikana (Shinyalu), Kassim Tandaza (Matuga), Ernest Kagesi (Vihiga), the late Malulu Injendi (Malava), and Beatrice Adagala (Vihiga County Woman Rep). The party also won the Lamu gubernatorial race, making Issa Timamy governor. Nationally, it had 33 MCAs.
For many supporters of ANC, particularly in Vihiga and Kakamega counties, the merger feels like the death of a political identity.
The party had established itself as a dominant force in these areas, offering candidates a platform to contest elections. With ANC gone, many politicians who had hoped to use its ticket in 2027 now find their political future uncertain. The decision to dissolve ANC has not been received well by its members.
Some party supporters feel that the party’s leadership rushed into the merger without consulting grassroots supporters.
“We had hoped the party would grow bigger in 2027 and 2032, but the gazette notice marks its sad death, and as supporters, we are disappointed,” said Martin Kivisi, a resident of Vihiga.
Despite the outcry from some supporters, ANC leaders have defended the merger as a step toward strengthening their influence within the ruling party.
Political analysts believe the dissolution of ANC could significantly reshape regional politics.
