The Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Anambra State, George Moghalu, has announced Ifeoma Okaro as his running mate for the forthcoming November 8 election.
He expressed strong confidence in the party’s preparedness for the race.
Moghalu presented Okaro during an interaction with ward Chairmen, Councillors and Women leaders in Akwa on Friday.
Okaro, a retired educationist from Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area, previously served as the chairperson of the Anambra State Post Primary Schools Service Commission.
She currently heads the Education Directorate of the Anglican Communion in Anambra.
During the unveiling ceremony, attended by party members and key stakeholders, Moghalu stated that her selection followed thorough consultations aimed at achieving a gender-balanced ticket and forging a credible partnership.
“She is a committed party member, with a wealth of experience, a shared objective, and a strategic vision to change the narrative of governance in Anambra State,” Moghalu said.
While addressing supporters, Moghalu reiterated his commitment to the electorate.
He said, “My deputy and I have resolved not to let you down.
“We will keep our promises. Hold me accountable, I will not disappoint you.”
He called on party members to step up grassroots mobilisation, underscoring the importance of unity and loyalty to the Labour Party’s success.
Dismissing rumours of internal rifts and alleged coalition, Moghalu stressed the party’s cohesion and readiness.
He said, “The Labour Party in Anambra remains united and ready for the election.
“Anambra is full of untapped potential. The real challenge is not infrastructure but the erosion of public trust in governance.
“We must restore that trust through good governance, accountability, and addressing insecurity.”
Highlighting his record as former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Moghalu pledged to replicate the same principles of transparency and integrity if elected.
During her acceptance speech, Okaro thanked the party for the nomination and emphasised the importance of unity and collective effort.
“I am deeply honoured and ready to serve.
“With your support, Labour Party will emerge victorious,” she said.
PUNCH Online had reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission officially listed Moghalu as the Labour Party’s candidate for the November 8, 2025 Anambra governorship election.
This stirred controversy as it affirmed Julius Abure’s leadership as the party’s recognised National Chairman.
Moghalu, who emerged from the Abure-led faction, secured 573 votes at the party’s primary held on April 5 in Awka.
He defeated his only opponent, John Nwosu, who garnered 19 votes.
The primary, which was observed by INEC officials and election monitors, had 649 delegates in attendance, with 601 accredited.
Of the ballots cast, 592 were valid while five were declared invalid.
