Anambra denies ethnic motive in Ogboji killings as Ebonyi demands probe
The Anambra State government has expressed deep sadness over the killing of innocent citizens during a recent attack in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Council of the state.
Gunmen on Monday reportedly opened fire on a gathering in Ogboji, allegedly made up of individuals from Ebonyi State. About 13 people were said to have been killed, with several others sustaining injuries.
As of press time, no group has claimed responsibility for the brutal attack, and the motive remains unknown. In a statement issued yesterday by the Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, the Anambra State government condemned the act and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.
“We want to assure the good people of Anambra and beyond that this incident was not targeted at any particular state or ethnic group. Preliminary investigations suggest that the unfortunate incident may have stemmed from an internal squabble,” Mefor stated.
He added, “The government expects the police command to conduct a thorough investigation, identify the perpetrators of this heinous crime, and bring them to justice.”
The state government also assured the people of Ogboji and the entire state of its commitment to ensuring justice is served. “We urge all residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended. We will continue to work tirelessly to maintain peace and security in our great state,” Mefor said.
Meanwhile, Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, through his Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor, has called on Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, to ensure a swift, thorough, and transparent investigation into the incident.
Describing the attack as a “senseless act of violence against law-abiding citizens,” Nwifuru said it was not only barbaric but also a direct assault on peace, unity, and the sanctity of human life.
The governor, who disclosed that he was already in communication with Governor Soludo, vowed to ensure that justice is served. While awaiting the outcome of investigations, Nwifuru appealed to the people of Ebonyi, especially affected families and communities, to remain calm and avoid any form of reprisal or action that could escalate tensions.
