After putting up a great fight against the reigning EuroLeague champion, Panathinaikos, and losing the series in five games, Anadolu Efes has fully turned its focus to the Turkish Super League. In their last three games, they easily defeated their opponents, and thanks to Besiktas’s loss to Turk Telekom, they remain in contention for the second-place spot at the end of the regular season. However, that final step won’t be easy, as they lost the first head-to-head matchup against this team quite convincingly. What is encouraging is that Anadolu Efes is clearly on an upward trajectory and playing with great rhythm. It seems that the loss to Panathinaikos hasn’t left much of a mark on Luca Banchi’s squad. Their current record stands at 22 wins and 7 losses, and in the last round, they easily defeated Galatasaray.

What’s especially promising is the fact that Anadolu Efes has raised their defensive play to a high level, establishing themselves as the best defensive team in the league. In their last three games, they’ve allowed an average of just 65 points per game—an impressive result—including holding Galatasaray to just 53 points on the road. On the offensive end, it appears that Shane Larkin is back in rhythm, and when he’s playing well, it’s clear that Anadolu Efes can beat any team in Europe. Of course, the brilliant American isn’t doing it alone—he has solid support from his teammates, who have successfully stepped up in the absence of the injured Rodrigue Beaubois.

Besiktas, on the other hand, played one of their worst games of the season in the previous round against Turk Telekom and suffered a heavy defeat. That loss ended a phenomenal 15-game winning streak. That great run brought them to a record of 23 wins and 6 losses, putting them on the verge of securing second place before the playoffs. In order for Dusan Alimpijevic’s team to officially secure the second spot, they must not lose by more than 16 points in the game against Anadolu Efes. Based on what we’ve seen, that shouldn’t be too difficult for Besiktas’s players—but they cannot afford to repeat the performance they showed in their last game.

It seems the team approached the game against Turk Telekom a bit too relaxed, almost as if they already saw themselves in second place. But now, they’ll have to give their maximum effort against Anadolu Efes—a team they’ve already beaten twice this season. However, it’s important to note that those wins came against an Efes side that was in significantly worse form than they are now. Looking at the stats, it’s clear why Besiktas is at the top of the league. They have the second-best offense, right behind Anadolu Efes, and the third-best defense, behind Efes and Fenerbahce. The one area where Besiktas falls short compared to the league’s top teams is rebounding, and that’s a segment they must improve significantly if they want to make a serious push in the playoffs.

Besiktas has won both matchups this season. In the game played in mid-February as part of the Turkish Cup, Besiktas won 85–80. In their Turkish Super League clash, Besiktas was also better, winning 87–70.

Rodrigue Beaubois is injured and will not play for Anadolu Efes. Additionally, due to the rule limiting the number of foreign players allowed to play, Anadolu Efes will be without several other international players.

Anadolu Efes has shown that they have been in good form for quite some time now and are definitely on the rise. On the other hand, Besiktas has also demonstrated solid form in recent weeks. However, they are likely to enter this game with a more relaxed approach, as they can afford to lose by up to 17 points and still retain their position. Therefore, expectations are that Besiktas may not play with maximum intensity, and that—combined with Anadolu Efes’s quality and current form—could lead to a more convincing win for the home team than the offered point spread suggests.
