AmaMagdalena 'opens the door' for travel to Colombia

The launch of ‘ AmaMagdalena, the first-ever luxury river cruise ship to sail the Magdalena River in Colombia, marks a major milestone for the river cruise company.

The official launch took place on 12 April 2025, with it being hailed as a transformative moment for both the company and Colombian tourism.

“Our expansion into Colombia represents a new chapter for AmaWaterways and for the world of river cruising,” said. “We are proud to be the first major river cruise line to explore the Magdalena River, a region that until now has been largely inaccessible.

“AmaMagdalena opens the door to a culturally rich destination, and we’ve worked closely with local communities to ensure our presence benefits everyone involved—from our guests to the people who call this river home.”

Designed to carry just 60 guests, AmaMagdalena was built in collaboration with Colombian craftspeople and woodwork specialists. The ship was designed by renowned architect and interior designer , who drew inspiration from the region’s natural beauty to create a vessel that reflects the soul of Colombia.

Staterooms range from 22 to 48 square metres and include AmaWaterways’ signature twin-balcony design. The ship’s interiors were crafted by of Casa Schlegel Donado in Barranquilla, while Cartagena-based Ocean Projects handcrafted the intricate woodwork.

Onboard, guests will enjoy a sun deck pool, a spacious fitness room, a main restaurant serving Latin American and Western cuisine, and an al fresco specialty dining venue.

The ship will sail two seven-night itineraries, Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia, sailing between Cartagena and Barranquilla. Highlights include a private celebration of the Barranquilla Carnival, a guided tour and jazz performance in UNESCO-listed Mompox, birdwatching of endemic species, and a deep dive into the musical and historical legacy of Palenque, the first free town in the Americas. Optional pre- and post-cruise land extensions are available in Medellín, Cartagena, and Panama City.

According to , the response from Australian and New Zealand travellers has been overwhelmingly positive. “We’re incredibly excited to see the first departure of our long-awaited river cruising on Colombia’s Magdalena River,” he said.

“Over five years of research and development have brought this vision to life; being the first ever river cruise line to travel these waters is a true testament to AmaWaterways’ pioneering spirit.”

Already, the company has seen strong bookings for the new Colombia itineraries out of Australia and New Zealand, he revealed. “Travel advisors tell us this has been very appealing to their well-travelled clients who have been everywhere and done everything. They’re looking for new stories and experiences, and to travel off the beaten track. That’s what a Colombian river cruise will offer them.”
