The allocation of affordable housing units will be fair to all Kenyans and no citizen will be discriminated against, President William Ruto has assured. 

The President also said allocation of the units will be done transparently to ensure that many Kenyans benefit.

Inspecting progress of the Kibera Soweto East Zone B Affordable Housing Project in Kibra Constituency, Nairobi, on Friday, President Ruto said: "I give you my assurance that allocations will not be done on an ethnic basis. All deserving Kenyans will benefit equally because we want to build a united country."

The Kibera Soweto East Zone B project consists of 4,600 units. President Ruto announced that 25,000 units would be built in Kibera.

"Kibera used to be famous for being the largest slum in Africa, but with the affordable housing program, we will transform it into the largest decent estate in Africa," he said.

He said enumeration for Kibera Soweto Zone C and D is ongoing, after which over 10,000 people will be facilitated to move to free up land for another project. 

President Ruto assured residents that they would be given the first priority in the allocation of the units.

"Rest assured that you will be given the first priority to own the houses before considering other Kenyans," he said.

Overall, there are more than 150,000 affordable housing units under construction in 200 sites across the country, employing over 200,000 young people. 

Meanwhile, the President directed that Undugu playground in Kibera be upgraded immediately. 

Present at the function were Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Lang'ata MP Phelix Odiwuor (Jalang'o) and MCAs, among other leaders.
