Alexis Joel and Christie Brinkley support Billy Joel's recovery - Newsday
Alexis Joel, wife of music icon Billy Joel, and Bridgehampton supermodel Christie Brinkley, an ex-wife of the Grammy-winning musician and the mother of their daughter, singer-songwriter Alexa Ray Joel, each are expressing support for the Hicksville-raised icon following his announcement Friday that he was canceling all upcoming concerts due to a brain disorder for which he is undergoing treatment.
“Thank you for the outpouring of love and support,” Alexis Joel, 44, mom of the couple's daughters Della Rose, 9, and Remy Anne, 7, told fans in an Instagram post Monday. “We are so grateful for the wonderful care and swift diagnosis we received. Bill is beloved by so many, and to us, he is a father and husband who is at the center of our world. We are hopeful for his recovery. We look forward to seeing you all in the future.”
Brinkley, 71, wrote Saturday on Instagram, “Dear Billy, The whole Brinkley gang is sending you lots of love and good wishes for a full and speedy recovery. I was looking for some cute photos of you and Alexa to send you,” her post continued “when I came across this clip from a recent concert” that Brinkley attended with Sailor Brinkley-Cook, 26, her daughter from another marriage.
The video opens with Sailor and Billy Joel, 76, backstage at an unspecified Madison Square Garden show, with Sailor playfully singing his 1980 hit “You May Be Right” and Joel proudly saying she captured the song’s defiant “attitude.” The video then segues to snippets of Joel performing onstage and Brinkley and her daughter singing along and dancing to various songs.
“It made me laugh,” Brinkely wrote, “... and all the sensational sing a longs you’ve [led] … you turn an arena of strangers into a living room full of friends as we all sway in unison.”
Referencing lyrics in the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer's signature song, 1973’s “Piano Man,” she added, “I’m sure I’m speaking for everyone in that room when I say please take good care of yourself, we all want you back in that white hot spotlight, you’re OUR piano man ... We Love You, the kids, me and a whole bunch of full arenas!”
Sunday on Instagram Stories, where messages cycle out after 24 hours, Alexa Ray Joel posted a black-and-white photo of herself and her father performing onstage together. “Just sitting here, thinking of My Father,” she wrote. “How I’ve loved and cherished all these glimmering days with my hero. This seems like just yesterday, and yet it was years ago now. Every moment with you is a diamond, Pop.”
Billy Joel, who has a home on Centre Island, was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, or NPH, he announced Friday on social media accounts. NPH is caused by excessive fluid in the ventricles of the brain, according to the websites of the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Medicine.
"This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance," the statement continued. “Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period.”
After noting his gratitude “for the support from fans during this time,” the post added a statement from Joel: “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.”
The canceled shows, running from July 5 through July 3, 2026, include a July 18 concert with Rod Stewart at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, an Aug. 8 show with Stevie Knicks at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and an Aug. 21 concert with Sting at Citi Field in Queens.
