Ajayi praises tactical discipline as Osun United edge Warri Wolves in NNL opener
Osun United head coach Seyi Ajayi has commended his players’ tactical discipline following their hard-fought 1-0 victory over Warri Wolves in the opening fixture of the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 playoffs.
Speaking shortly after the match at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Ajayi described Warri Wolves as a formidable side but noted that his team executed their game plan to perfection.
“Warri Wolves are a very good and formidable side. We studied their play and knew they would come at us directly. So, we set up to absorb and strike on the counter. That’s exactly what worked for us,” Ajayi said.
The Osun United coach also turned his focus to their next Southern derby clash against Crown FC, describing it as a familiar rivalry.
“Crown FC are no strangers to us. We’ve met several times and know what to expect. As always, we’ll be well prepared. Seventeen years outside the elite division is too long. This is our chance to rewrite that history,” he added.
Meanwhile, Warri Wolves’ head coach, Napoleon Aluma, has urged his team to regroup quickly, declaring their next two fixtures as must-win encounters to keep their promotion hopes alive.
“It’s always painful to lose your first match in a short tournament like this. But all hope is not lost. We’ve looked inward, we’ve seen the lapses, and we’ll bounce back better,” Aluma said.
Warri Wolves are set to face Kun Khalifat FC today (Monday, July 7), in what has become a crucial test of their resilience and determination.
Aluma also made a passionate appeal to fans and supporters to rally behind the team.
“We’re calling on our supporters and fans here in Delta to come out en masse and lift the team. The dream is still bright, and the remaining two matches must be won,” he stressed.
The NNL Super 8 playoffs continue with high stakes as teams battle for coveted promotion slots into the Nigerian top-flight league.
