AirTrain fares to JFK reduced from June 30 to Sept. 1, Port Authority says, to encourage use of mass transit during construction, summer travel
AirTrain ticket prices will be reduced from $8.50 down to $4.25 from June 30 through Sept. 1, in an effort to reduce traffic congestion at a time of increased summer travel and ongoing airport construction, the Port Authority said.
Kennedy Airport is undergoing a yearslong construction project with a $19 billion price tag to build new roads and terminals.
"Yes, there will be some temporary inconvenience," Port Authority chairman Kevin O’Toole said in a Tuesday news release. "But it’s all part of building an airport our region can be proud of — for decades to come."
AirTrain tickets were previously reduced in 2024, with the same 50% reduction offered from July 1 until Sept. 1. Tuesday’s release from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said this summer’s travel is anticipated to set records with an expected 18.3 million passengers.
The half-price fares apply to Jamaica and Howard Beach stations, the two off-site stations that use payment from OMNY cards or MetroCards. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is trying to phase out MetroCards and switch to OMNY cards only.
Port Authority officials encourage the use of public transit for commuting to and from the airport. For travelers who need to use a car for transportation, Port Authority has a drop-off and pickup lot at the Lefferts Boulevard station, which is a free 8-minute AirTrain ride to all terminals.
The announcement noted parking will be "extremely limited" and passengers who need to park should guarantee a spot through JFKAirport.com. Officials advise those who must drive to Kennedy Airport to arrive three hours before their flight’s departure time.
"This summer’s projected increase of 300,000 passengers, combined with last year’s increase of 700,000, means that JFK’s summer passenger volume will increase by 1 million in the two years that airport construction has been at its busiest," the release said.
