With an aim to boost India's push for Artificial Intelligence efforts, Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Industries is planning to build the world’s largest data centre in the country. According to a report by Bloomberg, the data centre will be located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, where Reliance also has the world's largest oil refinery.

The project will leverage cutting-edge AI semiconductors from Nvidia, a global leader in AI technology, marking a significant milestone in India's AI aspirations.

In September, Reliance and NVIDIA announced a partnership to develop AI supercomputers in India and create large language models (LLMs) trained on the country’s diverse languages.

In August 2024, Chairman Mukesh Ambani had announced that Reliance Industries would establish gigawatt-scale data centres in Jamnagar, Gujarat, to democratise access to AI infrastructure in the country.

“With Jio’s AI Everywhere For Everyone vision, we are committed to democratising AI, offering powerful AI models and services to everyone in India at the most affordable prices,” Ambani had said.

Earlier this month, Akash Ambani, the director of Reliance Industries, had said that the AI infrastructure in Jamnagar will be developed in a short span of 24 months.

"AI infrastructure that we have commenced working on in Jamnagar will not only make Jamnagar a leader in AI infrastructure, but will also place it amongst the top rank in the world."

"We have already commenced building this in Jamnagar and we want to complete it true Jamnagar style, in record time, as we have always done in Jamnagar in 24 months," Akash Ambani had said.

Jamnagar, which is located some 300 km away from Gujarat's capital Gandhinagar, is already home to the world's largest oil refinery, which was launched by Reliance on December 28, 1999.

The Ambani family has deep-rooted ties to Jamnagar, where Dhirubhai Ambani's wife, Kokilaben, was born.

Reliance also operates Vantara, a wildlife rescue centre within the Reliance Jamnagar Refinery Complex.
