Afenyo-Markin claims attack by NPP members

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has revealed that he faced criticism from within his own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for facilitating a swift vetting process for President Mahama's ministerial nominees following an election. According to Afenyo-Markin, some NPP members took issue with the expedited vetting, but he defended his decision by emphasizing the need to avoid a governance vacuum and ensure a quick formation of the government.

Afenyo-Markin stated, "When we lost the election, some people attacked me for allowing Mahama's ministers to go through the vetting process faster than expected." He added, "But I said, look, we don't need to create a vacuum. Let's push it through. The government must be formed quickly. If they make mistakes, that's when we can criticize them."

Despite facing internal opposition, Afenyo-Markin stood by his belief that a smooth transition was crucial for maintaining stability. He acknowledged the difficulties of leading the Minority in Parliament, admitting, "There are times my colleagues disagree with cooperation. There are times they don't like my approach. But as a leader, you must always balance it." These challenges highlight the balancing act required of a leader navigating diverse opinions within their own ranks.

In addition to internal party dynamics, Afenyo-Markin addressed his rigorous scrutiny of certain NDC MPs during vetting, specifically mentioning Sam George. He justified his approach by stating, "Yes, I wanted to scrutinize him. I needed to. That's politics." He explained that Sam George's past criticisms of President Akufo-Addo and the Chief Justice warranted thorough questioning. "There were a lot of attacks on the Chief Justice and on Akufo-Addo. If you make such strong statements, you should be ready to defend them when the time comes," Afenyo-Markin elaborated.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized his commitment to his role as Minority Leader, stating, "I have to play my role as Minority Leader. I am responsible for leading the party's rebranding. The base must be activated, and we must hold the NDC to the fire." He underscored the importance of perception in politics, asserting, "The most important thing is that it's a perception-driven enterprise. People must see that you are fighting for your party. That's what matters."
