Adekunle Gold marks World Sickle Cell Day with free healthcare for 1,000 warriors

Singer Adekunle Gold has launched a free health insurance initiative for 1,000 individuals living with sickle cell disease in commemoration of the 2025 World Sickle Cell Day.

The project, called 5 Star Care, was unveiled on Thursday, in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Health, the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), and the Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria.

Adekunle Gold also shared a video on his , announcing the initiative.

He captioned the post: “Today is World Sickle Cell Day.
And today, I’m proud to announce something that’s deeply personal to me.

“5 Star Care isn’t just an initiative, it’s a promise.
A promise to make sure that sickle cell warriors are seen, heard, and cared for.
We’re starting small by providing free health insurance to 1,000 people living with sickle cell in Lagos State.
But this is only the beginning.”

The health insurance scheme will cover routine care, emergency treatment and specialist consultations, giving beneficiaries access to comprehensive healthcare services through LASHMA’s platform.

Speaking further about the motivation behind the project, the 37-year-old, who has publicly shared his personal experience with sickle cell, said:

“5 Star Care isn’t just an initiative, it’s a promise. A promise to stand by our warriors, to fight alongside them, and to ensure they have access to the care and support they need.”

“We’re starting small by providing free health insurance to 1,000 people living with sickle cell in Lagos State. But this is only the beginning. Our goal is to reach as many warriors as possible, across the country and beyond.”

Adekunle Gold, born Adekunle Kosoko, first disclosed in 2022 that he had battled sickle cell from childhood. In a personal newsletter to fans, he shared how the condition nearly claimed his life and shaped his resolve to live fully and uplift others.

World Sickle Cell Day is observed annually on June 19 to raise awareness about the genetic blood disorder and advocate for better care and support for affected individuals.

With 5 Star Care, Adekunle Gold is now translating his advocacy into tangible impact for the sickle cell community.
