Accra: Rainstorm Causes Havoc, Disrupts Power Supply

Accra, March 26, 2025 – A severe rainstorm that swept through Accra on Tuesday, March 25, has left a trail of destruction, impacting essential infrastructure and causing significant disruptions across the Greater Accra Region. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is currently working to restore power to affected areas after the storm damaged its distribution network, leading to widespread outages.

In a statement released today, March 26, ECG acknowledged the disruptions and assured the public that engineers have been deployed to assess the damage and expedite repairs. "The Electricity Company of Ghana wishes to inform our cherished customers that the heavy rainstorm that hit parts of Accra and its environs yesterday evening (25th March 2025) has caused some outages within our network," the statement read, urging customers to remain patient during the restoration process.

The storm's impact extends beyond power outages. The Accra College of Education is grappling with the aftermath of fallen electric poles and uprooted trees, leaving the campus without electricity. Hostel rooms were flooded, causing damage to students' belongings. Samuel Atintono, Principal of the Accra College of Education, stated that the management is evaluating the situation and taking stock of the damages. "Management is assessing the situation. The rainstorm came last night and a number of our trees have been uprooted and a part of the principal’s bungalow has been affected and the most critical one is that the uprooted trees are still on top of the buildings and the students are also writing their AIs,” he explained. Despite the chaos, students are continuing with their mid-semester exams while also trying to salvage their possessions.

The Madina Technical Institute has also suffered extensive damage, with classroom blocks and staff accommodations significantly affected. The storm ripped off roofs from nearly all buildings, including student dormitories. Vida Talima, the Senior House Mistress, expressed concern about the damage to learning and teaching materials, as well as the Principal's personal belongings. She emphasized the urgency of addressing the situation before students return from their vacation in two weeks.

Commercial areas were not spared either. At the A&C Mall in East Legon, a carport with solar panels collapsed, damaging over 50 vehicles. Reports from Damongo in the West Gonja district indicate that a young woman was injured when struck by an object during the storm and is currently receiving medical treatment. Numerous properties in the area have also been heavily impacted.

As the region assesses the full extent of the damage, the focus remains on restoring essential services and providing support to those affected by the severe weather event. The ECG continues its efforts to restore power, while educational institutions and other organizations are working to repair infrastructure and assist those whose properties were damaged.
