Accra may be widely seen as one of the more stable and peaceful capitals in West Africa, but it missed out in the latest ranking of Africa’s top 10 safest cities for 2025.

The 2025 Numbeo Safety Index places cities like Alexandria, Tunis, and Addis Ababa ahead, pointing out how North and East African capitals are leading the way in urban safety.

Leading the list is Alexandria, Egypt, with a Safety Index score of 54.5, followed by Tunis, Tunisia at 51.2, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia at 50.2.

Addis Ababa’s inclusion in the top three comes despite political instability in other parts of Ethiopia, as the city maintains relatively low crime levels in its core through local reforms and strong community ties.

Other cities that performed strongly include Cairo, Algiers, Casablanca, and Nairobi, all of which are benefiting from targeted investments in urban security, technology-driven surveillance, and better community policing strategies.

Lagos made the list at number 10 with a score of 31.6, a result that may signal progress in urban crime management in West Africa’s largest city.
