Abuja Lawyer Sued for Alleged Forgery and Impersonation

Published 1 day ago2 minute read

Victor Giwa and Ibitade Bukola, two Abuja-based lawyers, face forgery and impersonation allegations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court. The Inspector General of Police filed charge CR/150/25, accusing them of conspiring to forge a legal document attributed to Awa U. Kalu (SAN) to mislead the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF). The alleged offense occurred on June 28, 2024.

Prosecutors claim Giwa and Bukola forged and signed a letter on Awa U. Kalu's letterhead, urging the AGF to suspend Giwa's arraignment scheduled before Justice Samira Bature on July 2, 2024. The letter, titled “Urgent and Solemn Appeal to Suspend the Arraignment of Our Colleague Victor Giwa on Charge Number: CR/222/2023,” argued for the withdrawal of charges against Giwa at the FCT high court, citing “natural justice, equity, and fair play.”

Giwa, along with Cecil Osakwe and another individual, was initially to be arraigned on a nine-count charge, including illegal eviction, criminal intimidation, threat to life, and property damage amounting to N300 million. The new charges against Giwa and Bukola include conspiracy to commit forgery and impersonation (punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code Act, 2004), dishonest execution of a fraudulent document (Section 364), and false personation of a legal practitioner (Section 179).

During the scheduled arraignment before Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie, proceedings were halted due to the defendants' absence. J.K. Kolawole represented the Inspector General of Police, while U.J. Udoh represented the defendants. Udoh informed the court that Giwa was bereaved, having lost two sisters, and had traveled to his village for funeral arrangements, requesting an adjournment. Justice Onwuegbuzie granted the adjournment until September 15, 2025, warning against further excuses.
