In a recent appearance on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan took a nostalgic detour while reflecting on his long-standing camaraderie with fellow actors of his generation. Among the anecdotes shared, one stood out for its mix of warmth, humor, and irony — a story involving Shah Rukh Khan and a laptop that Aamir never used.

Aamir Khan recalls Shah Rukh Khan’s thoughtful gift in 1996; says, “Shah Rukh gave me a brand-new laptop, complete with all the paperwork and a nice case”

Aamir revealed, “Shah gifted me a laptop in the middle of a competition,” speaking of the mutual admiration that exists among the top stars from the 90s. “In our generation — be it Ajay, Akshay, Sanju, all of us — there's a lot of warmth and mutual respect. Of course, there's healthy competition too. Everyone wants to do better.”

Recalling a moment from 1996, Aamir narrated how he and Shah Rukh had appeared together on a television show, during which he confessed to being “technologically handicapped.” He explained, “I'm not a digital person at all. I'm completely analog. Like when people have meetings on Zoom, I just don't get how that works. Unless I sit face to face, it doesn’t feel like a real meeting to me.”

After the show, Shah Rukh, surprised to learn Aamir had never used a laptop, insisted on helping him adapt to technology. “He said, ‘What? You’ve never used a laptop? It’s so important! I’m buying a new laptop — I’ll get the same one for you too.’ He actually did proper research. Toshiba was the latest model at that time. He explained all its features, tried to convince me. I told him, ‘Don’t bother convincing me. I don’t understand any of it. Just get what you're getting for yourself.’”

Aamir added, “He very sweetly bought the laptop, installed Office, Excel, all those tools. He even told me how I could organize my whole calendar on it. But I was like, my calendar is all in my head. I’ve never done any of this. Still, with a lot of love, he gave me the brand-new laptop, complete with all the paperwork and a nice case. This was in 1996.”

He added, “Four years later, his manager stumbled upon the forgotten device tucked away in a drawer. When he asked if he could use it, I had forgotten it even existed. He showed it to me, and I was like, ‘Oh man, Shah Rukh got this for me! I never even used it.’ We tried switching it on — it was dead.”

The story, while humorous, also highlights the genuine bonds between some of Bollywood’s biggest stars — and Aamir’s enduring resistance to digital life.

“That was Shah Rukh’s thoughtful gift — and I never even got to use it,” Aamir said with a smile.
