A'ja Wilson Sets WNBA 5,000-Point Record

Las Vegas Aces superstar A’ja Wilson etched her name into WNBA history on Wednesday, becoming the fastest player to reach 5,000 career points. The monumental achievement occurred during the Aces’ game against the Connecticut Sun at Michelob ULTRA Arena. Wilson, who needed just seven points heading into the match, secured the milestone midway through the second quarter with a well-executed layup, reaching 5,000 points in an unprecedented 238 games. This remarkable feat surpasses the previous record held by Breanna Stewart, who achieved the mark in 242 games.
At 28 years and 321 days old, Wilson also became the second-youngest player to reach the 5,000-point threshold, trailing only Lauren Jackson, who accomplished it at 28 years and 96 days in her 259th game. Following the game, Wilson shared details about her special moment, showcasing the shoes she wore—inspired by Tiana from “The Princess and the Frog”—which were inscribed with “5K” and the date. She expressed her intention not to wear them again, preserving them as a tangible reminder of the achievement.
Reflecting on her historic night, Wilson described it as a “truly special moment.” She conveyed her gratitude and blessing for reaching such a milestone in the league, acknowledging the season's “ups and downs” but emphasizing the importance of cherishing this accomplishment while recognizing there is still “a lot of work to do” for the team.
Wilson's record-breaking performance was part of a typical all-around display that propelled Las Vegas to an 85-59 victory over Connecticut. The two-time WNBA champion finished the game with 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists, four steals, and three blocks. This extended her impressive streak of double-digit points to 62 consecutive regular season games, marking the seventh longest streak in league history and the longest active streak.
With 5,015 career points after Wednesday’s game, Wilson now ranks 27th in the WNBA’s all-time standings, with leader Diana Taurasi holding 10,646 points. Furthermore, her comprehensive performance on Wednesday made her only the sixth player in WNBA history—and notably the fastest and youngest—to accumulate 5,000 points, 2,000 rebounds, 500 assists, 400 blocked shots, and 200 steals. Aces head coach Becky Hammon commended Wilson, stating, “It’s interesting, she gets all these individual numbers and accolades, but I can tell you she’d trade them in a second for winning.” Hammon’s comments highlighted Wilson’s team-first mentality, emphasizing that for Wilson, personal achievements are truly celebrated when accompanied by team victories.
Following these results, the Las Vegas Aces currently hold a 7-7 record, placing them seventh in the WNBA standings, five games behind the first-place Minnesota Lynx.
