6 Over-the-Top Cocktails You Can Only Get in San Francisco

Published 6 hours ago4 minute read

The most intriguing budget busters aren’t punch bowls or large-format drinks designed for more than one person but those intended for personal indulgence (although you may be tempted to share a sip or two), incorporating pricey spirits or otherwise luxurious ingredients, dramatic tableside presentations, and wild garnishes.

Like a glass of bubbly, they are truly something special: perfect for celebrating, or just because.

Movida Lounge creatively incorporates both Persian and Mexican influences, and everything from the interior to the food has a luxurious vibe. The Millionaire’s Margarita ($50) is a perfect example. A twist on a classic, it blends Clase Azul Plata and Clase Azul Reposado with aloe vera, oleo-saccharum, and habanero, and is garnished with a perfect cube of Persian melon dusted in gold. Simultaneously hot, cool, sweet, and tangy, it uses milk clarification to achieve a crystal-clear look. The speakeasy revival may have passed, but secret bars are still very much a thing. Make a reservation at Left Door, then buzz for entry to be transported to a dark, moody, and very cool lounge that offers both classic cocktail and martini menus. The B10 ($45)—named for the premium vodka Belvedere 10—is an incredibly smooth and super frosty martini with Meyer lemon- and olive-oil-washed vodka, dry vermouth, fino sherry, and saline, served in an iced glass with a side of caviar on a perfect potato chip. Do additional citrus, earthy aromatics, and salinity improve upon the classic? Is caviar the perfect pairing for a martini? Finding out is a worthy endeavor. If you’re still jonesing for caviar beyond that accompanying chip, the menu offers more options, sans cocktail. // 1905 Union St. (Cow Hollow) leftdoorsf.com

To Carlo Splendorini, partner and mixologist at Bar Sprezzatura, the Martini Al Tartufo ($45) is a very sentimental, nostalgic creation. “We celebrate Italian flavors all over with this drink,” he says. “We use a Nebbiolo grape vodka, gin, gentian, and a touch of vanilla white truffle, Vesper-style, garnished with a slice of bianco nero truffle (black outside, white inside). It is presented on a tray with white truffle ‘caviar,’ a pearl spoon to spread it on with, and a truffle pergamena (thin cracker). “At Bar Sprezzatura,” he adds, “we always want to offer a bold version of a classic cocktail using an iconic Italian ingredient.” We wholeheartedly agree that this drink nails it. // One Maritime Plaza, 300 Clay St. #100 (FiDi) barsprezzatura.com

At Bar Iris, next door to Michelin-starred Nisei, you’ll find the Uni Cocktail ($38). Based on a flip, it is totally original, taking sexy to a whole new level. Rich and creamy sea urchin, smoky Laphroaig Quarter Cask, Château les Justices Sauternes, Alma Quinquina en Rama, yuzu sake, banana, and egg yolk blend together into a dessert-like drink that serves up spice, sweet, savory, and umami in a chic, uni shell-shaped ceramic vessel. It’s an “impress your date cocktail” that kicks the espresso martini to the curb. // 2130 Polk St (Russian Hill) bar-iris.com

An attention-grabbing Bloody Mary is the drag queen of the cocktail world: kitsch yet tasty. Fisherman’s Wharf classic Scoma’s serves an OTT version, The Don ($30), made with Ketel One vodka and their own housemade Bloody Mary mix. The extravagance comes in the garnishes: one of the city’s best crab cakes reimagined as a fritter, a bacon-wrapped scallop, a chilled prawn, and fried Castelvetrano olives. It’s a cocktail that drinks like a meal. Only available from 12pm to 4pm, it’s both a refreshing repast and an excuse to laze away the afternoon. // 1965 Al Scoma Way (Fisherman’s Wharf) scomas.com

$29

The Karl ($29) cocktail is The Ritz-Carlton San Francisco Lounge’s “look at me” beverage. According to Carlos Gomez, assistant director of food and beverage, it was designed to emulate San Francisco's iconic fog—but you probably figured that out from its look. An interactive showstopper, Gomez instructs: “before your first sip, gently poke the bubble to release a mystical white vapor, setting the stage for a sensory adventure.” The visually captivating drink “not only offers a nod to the city's famous weather but also promises a memorable and enchanting drinking experience,” he adds. It’s made from Belvedere Vodka, a signature syrup combining hibiscus with fresh grapes and sugar, elderflower liqueur, and foamy aquafaba, and topped with a smoke-filled “mystique bubble.” Does the bubble release a fog of rosemary essence? Of course it does. // 600 Stockton St (Nob Hill) ritzcarlton.com
