Director James Mangold and Timothée Chalamet on the set of A COMPLETE UNKNOWN. Macall Polay

Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” has a legitimate shot at sweeping the weekend. Suppose it claims victory at the Critics Choice Awards, the Producers Guild of America Awards, and the Directors Guild of America Awards. In that case, we can officially retire the “wide open race” narrative. A clean sweep would solidify its status as the undisputed frontrunner — especially since the PGA’s preferential ballot tends to favor consensus picks, and A24’s historical epic fits that mold. But come on, when has awards season ever played out so neatly?

At DGA, Corbet is the odds-on favorite, but don’t count out veteran filmmaker James Mangold, whose Bob Dylan biopic, “A Complete Unknown,” has gained momentum recently. Mangold is deeply respected in Hollywood, and that goodwill — combined with the film’s recent surge — could make him a real threat in the directing race.
