10 ways men can prioritise their mental health this month
“Mental health is just as important as physical health, and it’s time more men felt empowered to prioritise it without shame or stigma,” said mental health counsellor Angela Dacres.
Here are 10 ways Dacres says men can prioritise their mental health this month:
1) Talk about it: Open up to a friend, partner, or therapist. Talking is not weakness; it’s a release.
2) Get regular exercise: Movement reduces stress, boosts mood, and improves self-esteem. Even a daily walk helps.
3) Limit alcohol and avoid drugs: These can worsen anxiety and depression, even if they offer temporary escape.
4) Make sleep a priority: Aim for seven to nine hours. Sleep is vital for emotional regulation and mental clarity.
5) Find a purpose or hobby: Engaging in meaningful activities can bring joy, structure, and identity.
6) Check in with yourself: Journalling, meditation, or just 10 quiet minutes a day can help you process emotions.
7) Build strong social connections: Isolation increases risk of depression. Reach out, even if it’s just for a coffee or games night.
8) Seek professional help when needed: Therapy isn’t just for crises. It’s a powerful tool for growth and resilience.
9) Set boundaries and say no: Protect your energy. You don’t have to be everything to everyone.
10) Talk to other men about mental health: Help normalise the conversation. When one man speaks up it gives others permission to do the same.
