10 Marvel Characters Who Seriously Underestimated Spider-Man & Paid The Price

Published 9 hours ago7 minute read

Spider-Man is the friendly neighborhood superhero, guided by the lesson of power and responsibility. Peter Parker is also one of the most forgiving and compassionate heroes in Marvel Comics, but that doesn't mean villains should risk crossing him. Spider-Man also has a temper. Many villains have learned the hard way not to underestimate the Wall-Crawler.

The Kingpin underestimated Spider-Man's strength. Norman Osborn underestimated the lengths he'd go to destroy the Green Goblin. The Jackal underestimated Peter's devotion to his Uncle Ben's memory. Doctor Octopus underestimated Spider-Man's godly willpower. At every turn, Spider-Man proves to be supremely heroic, unwavering, and in some cases, vengeful to the villains' amazement.

Spider-Man's strength has been fairly consistent across different adaptions, but key moments make some stick out from others.

After Spider-Man revealed his identity to the world in Civil War, he placed a target on the backs of Peter Parker's loved ones. Iron Man promised to help keep them safe, but even Spider-Man and Tony Stark can't be everywhere at once. When the Kingpin hired Bullseye to target Spider-Man, Aunt May was caught in the crossfire.

In a quest for vengeance, Peter donned his iconic black suit once again, ultimately tracking the Kingpin down. Spider-Man took off his mask and shirt, fearlessly showing his face to New York's criminals, challenging Wilson Fisk to a brutal brawl. No gadgets. No web-shooters. Kingpin underestimated Spider-Man's strength and brutality, hurting his reputation.

During the 2015 Secret Wars comic event, readers met plenty of new versions of their favorite superheroes. More specifically, Peter and MJ fans had their greatest wish granted with the Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows miniseries: the couple was back and with a daughter named Annie.

When Venom threatened the lives of Mary Jane and Annie Parker, Peter snapped, growing more violent and aggressive than ever before. Why would Venom poke the bear in this way? He learned the hard way not to threaten Peter's loved ones. Spider-Man ultimately brought a burning building down on top of Venom, retiring after murdering the villain.

Back in "Kraven's Last Hunt," the Hunter brutally took his own life and only returned thanks to a magical ritual in "Grim Hunt." Kraven wanted revenge on Spider-Man, but more than anything else, he wanted Spider-Man to take revenge on him.

10 Sony Spider-Man Characters Who Deserve Movies More Than Kraven the Hunter

Kraven the Hunter is the last of the struggling Sony Spider-Man Universe, but there are other Marvel heroes who are more deserving of a movie.

To earn Spider-Man's ire, Kraven killed Kaine and threatened the lives of Spider-Man's loved ones. Kraven even gifted Spider-Man his iconic black suit and demanded he "hunt him." Spider-Man obliged and nearly took Kraven's life, as per Kraven's request. The Hunter believed Spider-Man would commit murder, but he underestimated Peter's morality and ability to give second chances.

Doctor Octopus was dying, trapped in his frail, failing body, at least until he switched minds with Peter Parker, trapping Spider-Man in his old body. "Dying Wish" was the ultimate race-against-the-clock for Peter Parker. Spider-Man was even forced to team up with the Sinister Six to try and reclaim his body.

While Doc Ock ultimately won, claiming Spider-Man's body, it was Peter who had the last laugh. With his dying breath, Peter imparted the lesson of power and responsibility to Octavius. A rush of memories and moralities hit Doc Ock like a wave, allowing him to become the Superior Spider-Man.

While this moment doesn't come from Spider-Man comics, the "Secret Wars" two-parter episode from Spider-Man: The Animated Series is iconic and lives rent-free in the heads of Spider-Man fans who grew up in the '90s. Doctor Doom claimed the Beyonder's powers on Battleworld, just as in the Secret Wars comic.

However, Doom underestimated Spider-Man in this animated series. While Spider-Man was just one of many in the ensemble cast of the Secret Wars comic, he was the literal star of the show in his own TV series, proving to be a fantastic leader, leading members of the Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four to defeat the godly Doctor Doom.

When Aunt May's life was in jeopardy, Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson did the unthinkable: they made a deal with Marvel's devil, Mephisto. Now, MJ was just as much a willing participant in this deal as Peter. She even added some fine-print alterations to this deal without Peter's knowledge.

While villains like Doc Ock and Mysterio have previously bonded with the Venom symbiote, Spider-Man's other foes would benefit from an alien costume.

Mary Jane may have underestimated how much Peter was willing to risk to save Aunt May's life. Giving up their marriage was not only a huge decision for the characters, but it ultimately changed the publication of Spider-Man books for decades. It also led to the erasure of Peter and MJ's potential future daughter.

When Norman Osborn returned as the Goblin King, Peter Parker was unfortunately trapped within the mind of Otto Octavius. As the Superior Spider-Man, Otto tried and failed to stop the Goblin. Otto eventually relinquished control of Spidey's body back to Peter, but not before creating an anti-Goblin serum.

When Peter returned as the Amazing Spider-Man, he surprisingly used Otto's formula, which injected nanites into Norman's system to prevent the usage of the Goblin Formula. Norman was completely shocked and permanently cut off from his Green Goblin persona––or so he thought.

Ben Reilly returned during the Clone Conspiracy miniseries, but not as the Sensational Spider-Man or the Scarlet Spider. Instead, Ben became the new Jackal, continuing Miles Warren's clone experiments. This time, Ben Reilly had a complete plan: resurrect anyone who ever died on Spider-Man's watch––friend or foe.

Ben attempted to convince Peter Parker and recruit Spider-Man into his New U company to change the world, taking Spidey's "no one dies" declaration to the extreme. Ben underestimated Peter's devotion to Uncle Ben. Ben underestimated himself, even, refusing to resurrect Uncle Ben, as he knew his idol would see the inherent flaws with Ben's plan to "save the world."

Norman Osborn eventually figured out a way to destroy the nanites in his body that were preventing the usage of the Goblin Formula. He just had to bond to the Carnage symbiote first, becoming the Red Goblin. The symbiote eradicated the nanites and the Green Goblin lived again, more powerful than ever.

A Missing Marvel Icon Should Become Carnage's New Host

While the former Venom Eddie Brock is currently working with the Carnage symbiote, The Punisher would be an ideal new host for the murderous symbiote.

While the Red Goblin targeted Peter's friends and loved ones, the Green Goblin's ego ultimately led to his downfall. Spider-Man tricked the Green Goblin into ridding himself of the Carnage symbiote. Without it, Spidey evened the playing field, creating a situation where he could defeat Norman, as he had dozens of times in the past.

Doctor Octopus returned after the events of Clone Conspiracy in a new body that was equal parts Otto Octavius, equal parts Spider-Man and his spider-powers. As the new Superior Octopus, Otto took control of Parker Industries, intending to use it to take over the world and defeat Hydra during the Secret Empire event.

Like so many times before, Doc Ock underestimated how much Spider-Man was willing to sacrifice to ensure his defeat. Peter Parker, CEO, took to the web and officially dissolved his company before Otto's eyes, destroying any resources Doc Ock would have used to take over the world. In one fell swoop, Spider-Man destroyed his company and all the Superior Octopus's plans.
