'Zootopia 2' Roars into Box Office History with Record-Breaking Opening

Disney's animated sequel, Zootopia 2, made a spectacular global debut, achieving what studio executives undoubtedly consider a Thanksgiving miracle. The film thundered into theaters with a massive $556 million worldwide opening, instantly positioning it among the biggest opening weekends of all time, for both animated and live-action features. This phenomenal figure places Zootopia 2 as the fourth-highest global box office opener in history, following only cinematic giants like Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Given that these predecessors all surpassed the $1.9–$2 billion mark by the end of their runs, Zootopia 2 is off to a truly elite start.

The financial breakdown of its opening weekend is astonishing: $400 million came from international markets, while $156 million was generated from North America. The film also set new records for the largest global animated opening, the largest international animated opening, and the biggest worldwide start of 2025, underscoring its immediate and widespread appeal.

China emerged as a pivotal territory, transforming Zootopia 2 into a global phenomenon. The sequel garnered a jaw-dropping $272 million in China since its Wednesday release, immediately becoming the biggest non-local animated opening ever, the second-biggest non-local debut of all time after Avengers: Endgame, and the sixth-largest opening in Chinese box office history, encompassing local films. Remarkably, within just five days, Zootopia 2 had already outgrossed the entire Chinese run of the first Zootopia, which earned $236 million. The franchise's immense popularity in the region has been significantly boosted by the opening of Zootopia Land at Shanghai Disneyland, which has considerably supercharged fan engagement.

Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, Zootopia 2 reunites the beloved rabbit police officer Judy Hopps, voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin, and the charming fox-turned-con artist Nick Wilde, voiced by Jason Bateman. This time, the duo faces a mysterious new reptilian resident, brought to life by Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan. The movie, with a release date of November 26, 2025, is categorized under Family, Comedy, Crime, Adventure, and Animation genres.

Beyond its box office triumph, the critical reception for Zootopia 2 has been overwhelmingly positive. Collider's Therese Lacson, in an 8/10 review, hailed it as a
