You can't create jobs by causing unemployment - Sammi Awuku criticizes Mahama over staff dismissals

Published 2 weeks ago2 minute read

Member of Parliament for Akuampem North, Sammi Awuku has described the government’s revocation of some public sector appointments as a “stab in the back” of young Ghanaians.

According to him, President John Mahama has very unfair to the teeming Ghanaian youth who joined long queues to vote for him with the expectation that he will create jobs to employ them.

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, on February 12, 2025, issued a directive revoking all appointments and recruitments made into the public service establishments after December 7, 2024.

Mr Debrah, in the directive, requested all heads of government institutions to take necessary steps to annul these appointments and recruitments into public offices.

The move, according to the Chief of Staff, was consistent with the government's stance on near-end-of-tenure appointments and recruitments, which were deemed non-compliant with established good governance practices and principles.

A comprehensive report on the actions taken were to be submitted to the Office of the Chief of Staff by February 17, 2025.

But commenting on the development following President Mahama's presentation on the State of Nation Address , Sammi Awuku in an interview with Channel1 TV, questioned what audit was carried out by the government to establish that persons who have had their appointments revoked were wrongfully recruited the affected persons were

"Through out the president's speech, one thing that I felt was a stab in the back of many young Ghanaians who did form a queue to cast a ballot for President Mahama was for him to create more jobs. In creating more jobs, the president decided to let them be unemployed. You cannot create employment by creating an unemployment situation.

"What auditing did they do? Did they show you any audit that they did institution by institution? If you have the nurses, if you have the teachers going through a training process by application, by screening, by interview and the issuance of appointment letter and you tell me that they lack governance principle, which audit did you do? why were the findings of the audit not published? It was purely a political decision, borne out of emotions and borne out of subjective ideas. I think there should be a paradigm shift in the way our governance processes work."
