Raila, who initially led in the first two rounds of the voting, was ultimately defeated by Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti, who clinched the chairmanship with 33 votes in the final round on February 15, 2025.

Despite the loss, Kabogo has praised Raila’s unwavering vision for Africa and his commitment to the continent’s unity.

“Raila’s bid for the AUC chairmanship was driven by his vision for a united and prosperous Africa. We are incredibly proud of the campaign he ran, which reflected his dedication to the continent’s progress,” Kabogo told TUKO.co.ke.

Additionally, Kabogo highlighted Kenya’s commitment to Africa’s progress and the importance of continued cooperation with Youssouf.

“Our collaboration with the new AUC leadership is crucial. As a nation, we remain focused on working together for a united Africa, supporting the new chairperson in his mission to steer the continent forward,” Kabogo affirmed.

The heated election, held in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, saw intense rounds of secret balloting by heads of state and government during the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union’s General Assembly.

Mahmoud emerged victorious after several rounds of voting, overcoming Raila in the final stretch.

In the first round, Raila led with 20 votes, while Mahmoud Youssouf secured 18 votes.

However, neither candidate met the required threshold of 33 votes, and the race continued through subsequent rounds.

In the end, Mahmoud outpaced Raila, securing the necessary votes to succeed Moussa Faki of Chad.

TUKO.co.ke also reported that President William Ruto thanked other countries who supported the former prime minister's bid.

Additionally, he congratulated Mahmoud on his win and Selma Haddadi who was elected the deputy chairperson.

The head of state added that the AUC elections were not about an individual but about Africa's future.

Jalang'o also penned touching words dedicated to Raila after his AUC loss.

He acknowledged that although the election result was not as hoped, Raila’s vision, dedication, and fight for democracy continue to inspire many.
