Will James Gunn's 'Superman' Have a Post-Credit Scene?

Published 17 hours ago4 minute read

James Gunn’s Superman is shaping up to be a fresh new start for the DC Universe – and fans couldn’t be more excited. As the first movie under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU, the upcoming project isn’t just about reintroducing the Man of Steel. It’s also expected to set the tone for everything that follows in the new DC timeline.

And that brings us to the question on every fan’s mind – will there be a post-credit scene? Well! When it comes to the superhero genre, post-credit scenes hold significant importance. They often tease what’s coming next or drop a fun surprise that completely catches the audience off guard.

So, should fans stay seated when the credits roll on Superman? Let’s break down what Gunn’s thoughts are on this matter.

James Gunn‘s Superman is the very first step in building a brand-new DC Universe. And with so much riding on this movie, fans are wondering about every little detail, especially whether they should stay seated for a post-credits scene. Well! Gunn addressed the same question at a press conference just before the trailer of the movie dropped.

According to him, Superman will “sort of” have a post-credits scene, but unlike what Marvel fans might expect, this one won’t tease the next big DC movie. Instead, the filmmaker wants it to be something fun and memorable for the fans (like a little bonus for those who stay through the credits), and not a major setup for future stories.

Why this change? Gunn explained via Games Radar that while working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, he teased the arrival of Adam Warlock in the post-credits scene. Now, what happened was that moment created so much expectation that he felt forced to include the character in the next movie, even when it became a challenge to fit him in naturally.

He then went on to call it a “pain,” and it’s something he doesn’t want to repeat in his role at DC Studios. Gunn added:

If you look at my credits scene on the Marvel movies, the one time I f**ked myself was when I put Adam Warlock in because then I’m like, ‘Oh sh*t, now I gotta put Adam Warlock in the next movie.’ Which actually was a pain in the a**.

For Gunn, such scenes should be light, fun, and not a promise of what’s next. Fans who are familiar with his work in Guardians of the Galaxy will remember how those scenes were often just playful extras, like Baby Groot dancing or Howard the Duck showing up for a quick laugh. That’s the kind of vibe he’s looking for in Superman as well.

So, all in all, there will likely be something waiting in the credits – but don’t expect it to be a big tease.

As the release date for James Gunn’s Superman draws closer, fans are eager for updates – and the director has finally spoken out. That’s right – Gunn has talked about two of the biggest questions swirling online: is the studio meddling with the movie, and what’s the latest update on the post-credits scene?

He took to Threads and responded directly to fans who were curious about the movie’s runtime and behind-the-scenes rumors. He confirmed that the final runtime of Superman will be “Inclusive of credits/post credits, the runtime is 2 hours 9 minutes.” So yes, there will be something extra when the movie ends.

But that wasn’t all. When asked in that same Threads post if Warner Bros. had pushed him to shorten the movie, Gunn shut down the rumor completely by adding, “zero truth to that.” He went on to explain that Superman is a DC Studios project, and the control lies entirely with his team, not with Warner Bros. Studios. He added, “They couldn’t even if that’s something that they wanted to. It’s a DC Studios film.”

The director also revealed that the movie is almost complete, with just a few VFX shots left to wrap up. With the movie’s tone, vision, and length all under his full control, it looks like Superman will be launching the new DC Universe exactly as Gunn intended. And for fans who love a good superhero surprise, staying through the credits is definitely worth it.
