Wide receiver Garrett Wilson: 'I'm hopeful I'm a Jet for life' - Newsday
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Garrett Wilson uttered the words every Jets fan wanted to hear from the young, playmaking receiver.
“I’m hopeful I'm a Jet for life,” Wilson said Wednesday.
There were rumors and speculation last year that Wilson would request a trade from the Jets because he was tired of losing and his relationship with Aaron Rodgers was strained.
Rodgers is a former Jet now. They released the future Hall-of-Fame quarterback and replaced him with Wilson’s friend and former college quarterback Justin Fields.
Wilson couldn’t be happier. When the Jets signed Fields, Wilson said, it brought “big smiles on your face.”
Smile was something Wilson did plenty on Wednesday, following the Jets’ second day of OTAs. That hasn't often the case in his first three seasons as a Jet.
Individually, Wilson has been terrific. He’s totaled 279 catches for 3,249 yards and 14 touchdowns. But the Jets have gone 19-32.
That appeared to be wearing down Wilson. He measures everything by team success. Wilson thirsts to win.
It’s why he’s been present for every offseason workout and the first two voluntary OTAs under first-year coach Aaron Glenn. Some players who are eligible for a contract extension like Wilson might hold out until mandatory minicamp. Wilson didn’t want to do that.
“Because I want to be a part of something special,” Wilson said. “I don't think that a whole bunch of individuals makes something special, as a group aspect. This is a group thing. I wanted to get in and know my teammates. I want to get in and know my coaches. It's a new staff, learn the material that they're putting out and not be the guy that's behind when this thing was mandatory.
“There's a way you go about business when you love what you do. Stuff like that's not really an option. I get the opportunity to come out here and work and make myself better at the game I love. Let's take advantage of it.”
Glenn said Wilson’s presence sends a powerful message.
“He's been here every day,” Glenn said. “When you have your best guys here every day, when you have your best guys working like that, man, that speaks for itself.”
Cornerback Sauce Gardner is in the same position and he’s been present at the offseason activities, too. The Jets want to lock up both players long term.
Wilson said the Jets and his agent have had “a few discussions here and there.” He looks forward to something getting done, but he’s not thinking about it.
“I try not to worry about it too much,” Wilson said. “That’s where I’m at. Every time I go out there, it's like, I'm playing football. When that stuff happens, that'll be a cherry on top. But it's not like, I shouldn't run this route. Like, nah.”
There were times last season that Wilson voiced his displeasure about not being as involved in the offense some games, especially after the Jets traded for Rodgers’ former Green Bay teammate Davante Adams. That shouldn’t be as much of an issue this year.
Fields and Wilson should have built-in chemistry from Ohio State. Wilson’s coach also knows how dynamic and difficult to guard he is — and Glenn plans to take advantage of that.
“Give him the ball as much as possible. . . . that's it,” Glenn said.
Wilson liked the sound of that, but he likes the feeling of winning so much more. He said he has to control his emotions better during and after games.
“The reality of it is, no, I wasn't happy losing, but I wasn't unhappy,” Wilson said. “When you put into it what we do every week, it's like you want it to be a certain way. You have this idea of how it can look and should look, and we just weren't hitting that. . . . So all of a sudden it's compounding, and that's all that was.
“You're really high, you're really hopeful, going into the year, and all of a sudden, God humbles you. That's all it was. I don't think it was for nothing. I think it'll be the reason that when we do this thing here in the near future that it'll feel that much better because of times like that.”
