'Wicked: For Good' Trailer Teases Changed Friendships

Published 1 day ago3 minute read

"And I've had so many friends...but only one that mattered."

Apparently, no good deed goes unpunished. However, the good deed of letting us see the shiny new trailer for Wicked: For Good should be allowed to slide.

The second half of the 2024 hit musical Wicked (Part 1), directed by Jon M. Chu, releases in theaters November 21, 2025. And this one looks like it should be just as popular as the first.

The trailer begins with Glinda (Ariana Grande) running out to the balcony of what looks like an Oz penthouse. She's searching for Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), who's now a fugitive of Oz.

"Come in before the monkeys spot you," Elphaba calls out into the night, indicating she still cares for her friend's well-being, despite the choice she made at the end of the first film.

We then see Elphaba herself, and hear her say, "There's no going back. This is between us–the Wizard and I."

And we're off to the races with numerous shots of scenes from the upcoming film. It looks like all of Oz will either be on the lookout for Elphaba or out to get her, including Prince Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) and the Wizard himself (Jeff Goldblum). We see Elphaba whipping up some spells–and what looks like Glinda walking down the aisle to get married(?)

The playful and joyful tone that was in much of the first film is gone from this one, replaced by a slightly darker one letting us know much has changed with these characters.

The vibrant visuals seem to have been carried over, though, along with the powerhouse vocals of the two leads as we hear them sing renditions of "No Good Deed" and "For Good" from the stage musical. For the OG Wizard of Oz fans, we also get a glimpse of some classic characters that will bridge an important gap in the overall story.

Those who are already familiar, casually or intimately, with this story should have an idea where these characters are headed. But Chu promises there will be some tweaks and twists to his version that should surprise and delight audiences in November.

For example, in an exclusive with Vanity Fair, Chu teases two brand new songs written by original Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz that will be featured in the film.

“They’re great additions to this movie. They were necessary in this movie to help tell the story,” Chu says in the interview.

And for families planning on watching this movie, Chu also talks about how the themes in this one are about growing up and all the changes that come with it. “I think the meat of what Wicked is all about happens in movie two," he notes. "To me, this is why this story exists. This is where our childhood dreams collide with our adult selves.”

Sounds interesting. We'll keep an eye on the weather and be ready to be swept away by this one in November.
