Why 'Chikni' was too sticky for Bollywood: The wild ride from Chikni Chachi to Stree 420 to Chachi 420! 420 : Bollywood News - Bollywood Hungama
The journey of Kamal Haasan’s beloved Chachi 420 is as dramatic and entertaining as the film itself. What started as Chikni Chachi - a title as sticky as a toffee in a kid’s pocket - morphed into Stree 420 before settling on the iconic Chachi 420. The tale behind this evolution is filled with enough twists, turns, and comedy to rival the film's screenplay.
Why ‘Chikni’ was too sticky for Bollywood: The wild ride from Chikni Chachi to Stree 420 to Chachi 420!
Back in March 1997, when Chikni Chachi began rolling, Shantanu Sheorey was at the helm of the project. A debutant director, Shantanu probably thought he’d be making his grand entry into Bollywood with Kamal Haasan leading the charge. Little did he know that Kamal Haasan’s perfectionism would soon turn into Chikni Chachi’s ultimate sticky wicket. Barely a week into the shoot, Kamal decided that Sheorey’s vision wasn’t meshing with his own. Whether Shantanu walked out or was gently nudged out depends on who you ask. Either way, Kamal Haasan took over the directorial reins, as he is wont to do when things aren’t up to snuff.
The film was already 90% complete by then. Kamal, however, went back and reshot the scenes directed by Shantanu because, let’s face it, Kamal is not the type to settle for half-baked results.
While Kamal Haasan was busy perfecting his cinematic masterpiece, the title Chikni Chachi faced a rather unexpected obstacle: its chikniness. Bambaiya Hindi might interpret chikni as good-looking, but in parts of North India, it translates to sticky - and not in a charming way.
Kamal Haasan, being ever-conscious of his audience, decided it was safer to bid adieu to Chikni Chachi. After all, his fan base included families, children, and ladies who might not take kindly to such linguistic ambiguity. Thus entered the placeholder title, Stree 420, which felt a bit like putting lipstick on a rather confused piggy bank. The title might have evoked some Raj Kapoor-esque nostalgia, but it still didn’t capture the film’s essence.
Finally, after much deliberation, the title Chachi 420 emerged as the clear winner - humorous, family-friendly, and catchy enough to stay in your head like the film’s catchy Vishal Bhardwaj tunes.
For those unfamiliar with Chachi 420, the film was a rib-tickling remake of Kamal’s Tamil hit, Avvai Shanmughi, which itself drew inspiration from the Robin Williams classic, Mrs. Doubtfire. The plot follows a desperate father who disguises himself as a woman to stay close to his daughter.
But the comedy didn’t just end on-screen. Behind the scenes, Kamal’s double duty as actor and director created its own brand of chaos. Imagine directing yourself in scenes where your co-stars (Om Puri and Amrish Puri) are falling head over heels for your disguised self. Kamal reportedly had to cut the shot multiple times because he couldn’t hold back his laughter - a rare sight in the otherwise meticulous Kamal Haasan’s directorial process.
Adding to the magic were Gulzar’s dialogues, which ensured that even the most absurd situations felt natural and relatable. The screenplay, written by Kamal himself, was peppered with brilliant comic moments, from mistaken identities to slapstick chases and emotional reunions.
When Chachi 420 hit the screens, it charmed its way into the hearts of audiences across India. The title might have changed a dozen times, but the heart of the film - its humor, emotional depth, and Kamal Haasan’s unparalleled performance - remained untouched.
Today, Chachi 420 stands tall as a comedy classic, fondly remembered for its clever storytelling and hilarious antics. As for the abandoned Chikni Chachi, well, let’s just say it served as the sticky stepping stone to greatness.
In hindsight, perhaps the moral of the story is this: you can’t judge a film by its title, but you can ensure it doesn’t sound like an off-brand candy. Thank you, Kamal Haasan, for giving us Chachi 420 - the Chachi we deserved.
