Tyla is hosting the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards this year and making history.

The South African-born singer will be the first African to host the beloved award show where kids vote online in categories like Favorite Song From A Movie, Favorite Butt-Kicker, and Favorite Male Breakout Star. Tyla herself is up for two awards - Favorite Global Music Star and Favorite Music Collaboration for 'Show Me Love' with WizTheMc and Bees & Honey.

"We're about to have a fun, messy time," she said in a promotional video for the award show. But how exactly did this 23-year-old Grammy Award-winner rise to fame?

Tyla released her first song, 'Getting Late,' after she graduated high school in late 2019. The music video was released in January 2021 and racked up millions of views on YouTube and was nominated for the 2022 South African Music Award for Best Music Video of the Year.

She gained international attention with her 2023 song, 'Water,' which won her the first-ever Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance and made her the youngest African artist to win a Grammy Award. The song also inspired a dance on TikTok.

'Water' was also the first song by a South African soloist to be on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 55 years after Hugh Masakela's 'Grazing in the Grass' charted in 1968.

Tyla released her debut self-titled album on March 22, 2024. That same year, she tied with Usher and Victoria Monét for the most awards won at the 2024 BET Awards.

Most recently, Tyla recorded a song, 'Everything Goes With Blue,' for the upcoming Smurfs movie. Also featured on the film soundtrack are stars like Rihanna and James Corden.

In an interview with Rolling Stone in January 2024, Tyla said, "When I was a kid, I always hoped that a pop star like Rihanna, Britney Spears or Michael Jackson would come out of South Africa. I wanted a star to come from my hometown. Now, for the people of my hometown, I want to be a pop star who represents South Africa."

The 2025 Kids' Choice Awards air Saturday, June 21, on Nickelodeon at 8 p.m. EST live from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Actor Jack Black is set to receive the special honor of King of Comedy during the show.
