What Chet Holmgren said after OKC Thunder won NBA championship

Published 8 hours ago3 minute read

Chet Holmgren and the Oklahoma City Thunder were crowned NBA champions Sunday night following a victory over the Indiana Pacers in a winner-take-all Game 7.

The former Gonzaga standout spearheaded one final defensive masterclass from the Thunder with an NBA Finals Game 7 record five blocks, as his team capitalized off 23 turnovers from the Pacers to come away with a 103-91 victory at the Paycom Center.

Holmgren chipped in 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and grabbed eight rebounds in 31 minutes of action. He became the fourth Gonzaga player to win an NBA title, joining Adam Morrison (2009 and 2010 with the Los Angeles Lakers), Ronny Turiaf (2012 with the Miami Heat) and Austin Daye (2014), while making history as the first Zag to win a championship as a starter.

Here's what Holmgren had to say to NBA TV following Game 7.

"Man, I just wanted to do whatever it took, whatever the team needed me to do to win the basketball game, and that's what we did. It wasn't always pretty all along; it's been so hard to get here, not only just in the Finals, but, you know we started training camp back in October. And we did all that just for this. And it's all worth it. I'm just so happy right now."

"If it's something you've never been through, it's really something that you can't grasp. And we're a team that no matter what happens, good or bad, succeed or fail, we're going to do it together. If we fall, we're going to get back up together. When we win, we're going to win together. Everything's going to be together. And this is no different."

"Honestly just let the game tell me what to do. I try to go out there, be aggressive every night; and as a competitor, sometimes you always get carried away, and you kind of stray off the line of listening to the game and try to enforce your will on it."

"But I feel like I did a great job tonight letting the game tell me what it needed, and going out there trying to execute get it done. And it wasn't just me. Everybody tonight that touched the floor made huge plays for us and we couldn't have got it done without every single person."

"Man I've said it before, but I'll say it again: everybody's a winner until it's inconvenient for them. Everybody's a winner when they get to do what they want on the floor. Everybody's a winner when it's going good, you know I'm saying? But when you have to sacrifice for the team, you have to do the right things off the floor to get ready for the games — that's when you find out who the real winners are. And the credit on that goes to [Thunder general manager] Sam Presti. He's put true winners on this team, in this building, and it really shows."

"Honestly, I couldn't care less about all the stats. If I had that record and we didn't win, it wouldn't have meant anything to me. So I'm just so happy for the city. I'm happy for [Thunder ownership group chairman] Clay [Bennett], happy for Presti, I'm happy for all the dudes who put in so much work to get here to support staff. It's been a long wait; not only this season, but going back in history. And I'm just so happy to be able to share this moment with the city."
