NBC’s highly anticipated special SNL at 50, which aired Sunday night, did not disappoint. The long-running sketch variety program celebrated 50 years on the air with a parade of special guests, current and former cast members, musical guests and celebrities that read like a who’s who of Hollywood elite.

It’s no surprise that a lot of those former cast members stole the show. Some performers, like Leslie Jones, Chevy Chase and Mike Myers, have kept lower profiles in recent years, and so seeing them back onstage was a thrill. Others, like Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, have successfully transitioned to movies or TV but proved they can still play to a live audience.

Lorne Michaels, the creator and producer of SNL, also tapped many favorite former hosts, including Dave Chappelle, Martin Short, Alec Baldwin and Scarlett Johansson, who appeared on the SNL at 50 special.

NBC had released the guest list days ago, yet there were still some unexpected attendees.

These were the five best moments, defined as funniest, most impactful or getting the most online buzz, from SNL at 50.

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey were one of the most dynamic duos in Saturday Night Live history. They wrote together and co-anchored Weekend Update. Sunday, they did what they do best, riffing off each other by answering audience questions and giving (as Seth Meyers pointed out) an opportunity to squeeze in a bunch of cameos by celebrities.

The evening featured several memorable performances, including Sabrina Carpenter and Paul Simon’s duet to open the show. But it was Miley Cyrus with Brittany Howard and the Roots who delivered the evening’s best musical moment, performing “Nothing Compares 2 U.” Of course, the late Sinead O’Connor famously performed the song on SNL in 1992 and ripped up a photo of the pope at the end of the song, protesting the Catholic church. It was one of the most infamous moments in the show’s history, and that wasn’t recreated on the special; but Cyrus and Howard’s take on the song brought it to a new level.

Eddie Murphy is one of the most talented cast members ever to work on Saturday Night Live. He was particularly known for his impressions, and on Sunday he delivered a great one during the “Black Jeopardy” sketch with Kenan Thompson and Leslie Jones. Murphy played special celebrity guest Tracy Morgan—made even funnier by the fact that Morgan himself appeared in the sketch. Murphy’s performance was spot-on. Tom Hanks also popped up at the end.

Kate McKinnon played dozens of memorable characters on SNL, but one of her best was unquestionably the woman in “Close Encounter” who was repeatedly abducted by aliens. Fellow former classmate Aidy Bryant returned as one of the government questioners, appearing with Jon Hamm, while Pedro Pascal and Woody Harrelson played other alien abductees. But the highlight of the sketch was Meryl Streep as McKinnon’s mom.

As you might expect, SNL at 50 devoted a good deal of time to “Weekend Update,” the news spoof that has always been a popular segment on the program. The SNL at 50 update included current hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che as well as recurrences of characters like Drunk Uncle and Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With at a Party. Meyers and former “Update” anchor Bill Murray also made fun appearances.
