Another disappointing season is coming to an end for the Washington Wizards, one in which they haven’t achieved much of note. It wasn’t expected that they would make significant progress compared to previous seasons, but they certainly hoped for more wins than they currently have. By the end of the season, the Wizards will be in the running for the worst team in the league, with their main competitor for that spot being the Utah Jazz. On a brighter note, the Wizards will likely secure one of the top five picks, or at worst, the sixth pick in the draft, which should bring them a talented player.
However, having a high number of talented players isn’t enough for success — much more is needed, and it seems that the Wizards lack that “something extra.” They will find it very difficult to escape their current tough situation. Simply put, when Jordan Poole, one of the most experienced players and someone who should be a role model for the younger players, is part of the team, you know you’re in trouble. Alex Sarr is one of those young, talented players who has shown some progress throughout the season, but he still has a long way to go to justify his high draft position.
The Orlando Magic had a solid first half of the season, despite the injuries and problems they faced, but it seems that they have faltered in the second half, which has put them in a position to compete in the play-in tournament. Fortunately for them, they will have two chances to make it to the playoffs, and most likely, both times they will be playing at home. What could be worrying, however, is the fact that the team has not made significant progress compared to last season.
The biggest problem for this team continues to be their shooting, especially three-point shooting, where they rank among the worst in the league. They tried to address this by bringing in Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, but his shooting percentages have significantly dropped compared to the previous seasons, partly because he’s no longer getting perfect passes from Nikola Jokic. Too often, the offense boils down to the two best players, Moritz Wagner and Paolo Banchero, trying to do everything on their own. They simply can’t do it all, especially when opposing defenses know that aside from the two of them, few other players can pose a serious offensive threat.
The Orlando Magic have won nine consecutive games against this team. They won all three matchups this season quite convincingly, with the smallest margin being 15 points.
Saddiq Bey, Malcolm Brogdon, Marcus Smart, Bilal Koulibaly, Corey Kispert, and Khris Middleton will not play for the Washington Wizards. Moritz Wagner and Jalen Suggs will not play for the Orlando Magic.
