Vinay Sapru, one-half of the Vinay-Radhika duo whose romantic re-run of Sanam Teri Kasam has created a box office hungama, speaks on plans to release a romantic film every Valentine’s Day beginning with the Sanam Teri Kasam sequel.

As the writers and directors of Sanam Teri Kasam, we’ve met countless people who watched the film in 2016 and told us they fell in love with every moment of it. They remembered every dialogue, every scene we had conceived. For nine years, fans considered it the ultimate romance film. They wrote to us every single day—365 days a year—asking for a re-release. The reels, the messages, the emails never stopped. They kept requesting us to bring their favourite film back to theatres, promising to make it the biggest success. They wanted to watch it 100 times on the big screen and give it the blockbuster status they always believed it deserved.

They stood by their promise, filling up cinemas and proving that movies ultimately belong to the audience. Once the optics of marketing and publicity fade, what remains is what’s truly meritorious. Sanam Teri Kasam found its people, and they made sure the world knew. And we waited patiently… believing, just like the dialogue we wrote in the climax of Sanam Teri Kasam: “मन का हो तो अच्छा, मन का ना हो तो और भी अच्छा… क्यूंकि वह ईश्वर की मर्जी है..” (If things go your way, it’s good. If they don’t, it’s even better… because that’s God’s will.)

Joy, joy, joy—to the square of infinity! (As the heroine Saru says in Sanam Teri Kasam.) This film is part of our soul as writers and directors, and seeing its impact on the youth of the nation has been the ultimate redemption. The fact that they connected so deeply with our storytelling, with the scenes we conceived, is overwhelming. Even the smallest gestures we designed for Harsh and Mawra—fans remember them by heart, recreating them in reels for nine years straight. That kind of love, persistence, and loyalty is something few films are blessed with. The audience never let go of Sanam Teri Kasam, and their love has finally translated into what we always knew it deserved.

The numbers were always steady, even though Sanam Teri Kasam was released without a big marketing push or hype, just a simple movie told from the heart. The word-of-mouth was incredibly strong, but due to politics within the studio and their tussle with the producer, the film was pulled out from theatres despite being houseful in many centres. We still remember a night when we were out for dinner near Gaiety & Galaxy theatre in Mumbai. As we were getting into our car, a man approached us. He said he was the gatekeeper of Gem theatre, where the film had been running non-stop for over 10 weeks. He asked us why the studio wasn’t promoting it, especially when other films from the same studio—ones that weren’t doing well—were getting aggressive publicity.

As they say, karma always catches up. Honesty, sincerity, and hard work always pay off. A beautiful film will always find its destiny. And slowly but surely, it did—online, on satellite, through fans who watched it 50, even 100 times. They memorized the dialogues, sang the songs, cried with Inder and Saru, and created reels every single day. It’s incredible what an audience that truly loves you can do—and how persistently they can love you for years.

It is the movie that closesy reflects our inner soul. Every word, every dialogue is a part of us. Every scene we conceived and designed reflects the rich culture and values of our nation. We always wondered, why don’t film makers write movies for Indian youth that are deeply rooted in our traditions and values? Why is it assumed that the youth only want “yuppie” stories with foreign titles and Western morals? We never believed in following fake trends or chasing foreign narratives. We knew our writing and our cinema were true to who we are as Indians. And today, our conviction has proved correct… our cinema has become huge connect with Indian youth. Sanam Teri Kasam has become a craze among the youth, proving that heartfelt, culturally rich stories are the ones that truly resonate. We directed this film without a single compromise—100% of what we wrote and visualized made it to the screen. So, naturally, it is one of our all-time favourites.

Yes, Mawra was the first and only choice—no doubts, no discussions. We saw her work, did a dialogue reading with her, and immediately knew she was our Saru. Harsh, however, was a case of destiny meeting talent. He was cast just a day before the photo shoot! Initially, we had selected another actor, but even after three months of workshops, he couldn’t deliver what we needed. We were worried—our photo shoot was the next day, and we still didn’t have our Inder. Then, as destiny would have it, we saw a clip of Harsh somewhere and asked our assistant to call him for an audition. He performed just two scenes, and he was electric. The best. It was a “yes” from the very first audition. Sometimes, the movie and its words choose their Inder and Saru—and that’s exactly what happened.

This is also a story of karma. The day Sanam Teri Kasam re-released, Mawra got married. And as the advance bookings were soaring, we told her—what better wedding gift could we have given her? She was, and will always be, the soul of Sanam Teri Kasam. She will always be a part of the Sanam Teri Kasam family. We would have loved to celebrate with her, but for now, we let her enjoy her newly married life and save the Sanam Teri Kasam celebrations for later.

We write young films. We write for the youth. We write teen romances. And we believe patience is always rewarded, and romance is always just around the corner. So yes, we are working on a musical with the most mind-blowing young pair - 18-year-olds who will enchant you with their charm and innocence.

Of course, Yes…! The audience has waited nine years to tell the world the secret they kept between us and them—that Sanam Teri Kasam is their love. And they want to see Inder and Saru’s story go forward. How can we not listen to them? We always knew Sanam Teri Kasam was special. When we first wrote it, we envisioned it in two parts. It was simply waiting for the right time to be made. And now, the audience has handed it to us on a platter. And we are ready with Sanam Teri Kasam 2! Next Valentine’s, we will meet our audience again… And hopefully, every year on Valentine we will meet our young fans… with a new tale of love… from Radhika Rao & Vinay Sapru’s world of teen romances.
