CNBC TV reported that the Boeing 787 aircraft belonging to Air India was carrying around 232 passengers and 10 crew members when it crashed.
According to the police report, Air India flight AI-171, bound for London’s Gatwick Airport, crashed shortly after takeoff near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, June 12.
A heartbreaking video emerged showing the exact moment the plane crashed just outside the airport.
From the video, thick plumes of smoke from the crash site were visible as far as Vastrapur, prompting panic in surrounding areas.
Union Civil Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said he was shocked by the news of the accident.
Naidu said emergency teams and rescue teams have been mobilised to ensure medical aid and relief support to the victims.
“Shocked and devastated to learn about the flight crash in Ahmedabad. We are on the highest alert. I am personally monitoring the situation and have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action. Rescue teams have been mobilised, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site. My thoughts and prayers are with all those on board and their families," Naidu said.
Air India has issued a statement confirming the crash, but with no update on the number of fatalities.
“Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates as soon as possible,” the company said as reported by Sky News.
