Victor Wembanyama Opens Up About Recovery

The San Antonio Spurs' journey this season concluded outside the NBA playoffs for the sixth consecutive year, marked by a 36-46 record. Despite this, the franchise holds optimism for the future, largely anchored by the promising duo of Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. A significant setback occurred when Wembanyama was sidelined in February due to a deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, a condition that prematurely ended his sophomore campaign. Had Wembanyama remained healthy, projections suggested the Spurs could have contended for a play-in tournament spot, or even a playoff berth.
In his second year, Wembanyama showcased his comprehensive skill set, averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and 3.8 blocks across 46 starts. His efficiency was notable, shooting 47.6 percent from the field. The 21-year-old's impact was particularly pronounced on the defensive end, where he led the NBA in blocks with a remarkable 176, surpassing Brook Lopez by a significant margin of 28.
Currently focused on recovery, Victor Wembanyama is diligently working to regain full fitness for the upcoming season. In a press conference, Wembanyama shared his progress, stating, "I’m able to do hard work, hard lifting, and also basketball work. It’s all very controlled and light. Sometimes, I feel like I would like to do more. It’s logical, a medical direction. We’re taking our time. I’m neither late nor early. It’s a process. There are definitely steps to reach that."
Reflecting on the care he received, Wembanyama expressed gratitude: "From my visits to the hospital and such, I think I got as good (of) care as you can get as a patient. So, looking back, I’m really lucky … But, all of us in that (locker) room, all of us in the league, we do with what we get, we do with what we are blessed with. And I’m still in the 1 percent luckiest people, so I’ve got nothing to complain about, and it is a really slight setback," he added, underscoring his positive outlook despite the challenges.
