In our data-driven economy, math is everywhere. This is the premise of “Counted Out,” a compelling new documentary now screening across the country.

Bullock

The film includes insights from Erika Bullock, an associate professor of mathematics education in UW–Madison’s School of Education. A faculty member in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Bullock is one of several experts featured in the film. Her research focuses on two key areas: conceptualizing urban mathematics education and examining the historical context of issues in the field.

“Counted Out” argues that our numeric literacy, or whether we can speak the language of math, is a critical determinant of social and economic power.

Through personal stories, expert interviews, and scenes of math transformation in action, the film makes a powerful case for rethinking who math is for — and why inclusive math education matters.
