US Senate Moves To Block California's 2035 Ban On Gasoline-Only Vehicles
The US Senate has voted to block California’s landmark plan to end the sale of gasoline-only vehicles by 2035, a policy already adopted by 11 other states representing a third of the US auto market.
The measure, which repeals a waiver granted by the US Environmental Protection Agency under former President Joe Biden in December, now heads to President Donald Trump for approval.
The waiver had allowed California to mandate that at least 80 per cent of vehicles sold by 2035 be electric.
The Senate vote is a victory for automakers such as General Motors and Toyota, who had heavily lobbied against the regulations. It is a setback for California and environmental groups, who argue that the requirements are crucial to ensuring cleaner vehicles.
A spokesperson for the automotive industry stated, “This decision recognises the challenges our companies face in meeting overly aggressive mandates and supports a balanced approach to innovation.”
Meanwhile, environmental advocates warned, “Blocking these rules undermines efforts to combat pollution and protect public health.”
